University admission: Don't be subjective about the reduced floor score, the standard score will be low

More than 200 universities have announced their minimum scores, with scores dropping significantly compared to last year. However, candidates should not be subjective when choosing to register for admission because high or low benchmark scores depend on many factors.

Many universities lower their entrance standards.

In 2025, based on the analysis of the score distribution of high school graduation exams, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the mandatory entrance threshold for the education and health sectors. Accordingly, the education sector will maintain the same floor level as last year, but the floor level of 11 health sectors will only be from 17 to 20.5 points, a sharp decrease after 5 years of almost standing still in the range of 19-22.5 and the lowest ever.

Medicine and Dentistry still have the highest entry requirements. Next are Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy with 19 points.

Other majors in the health sector that recruit candidates with 17 points or more include: Nursing, Preventive Medicine, Midwifery, Dental Prosthetics, Medical Testing, Medical Imaging and Rehabilitation.

It can be seen that this year, the average score of the 5 traditional university entrance exam groups decreased by 0.8-2.1 points compared to last year. The B00 group group decreased the most, followed by A01 (Math, Physics, English - 1.59 points), A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry - 1.52), and C00 (Literature, History, Geography - 1.24). Following this trend, many universities announced lower floor scores than last year.

Foreign Trade University has announced the minimum admission score for 2025, which is lower than last year for a series of admission combinations. Accordingly, to be eligible for admission to the school, candidates must score at least 24 points in the 2025 high school graduation exam combination (Math, Physics, Chemistry), and 23 points for the remaining combinations. Last year, the school set the minimum score for all combinations at 24 points.

In Ho Chi Minh City, some schools have reduced their minimum scores by up to 6 points compared to last year. The University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) announced a minimum score of 16 to 24 points depending on the major. Of which, the majors of Information Technology, Computer Science , and Artificial Intelligence decreased by 4 points (to 20 points), and Data Science decreased by 6 points.

The University of Economics and Law (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City) accepts applications from 19 points for all majors, a decrease of 2 points compared to last year. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities applies two floor levels of 18 and 20 points, most majors decrease by 0.5-1.5 points.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry accepts applications for admission based on high school graduation exam scores of 16 points for all majors, of which Veterinary Medicine has the sharpest decrease, from 22 points to 16 points.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade accepts applications from 16 points for all majors; Law and Economic Law are 18 points. This minimum score is 1-4 points lower than last year, in some majors in the fields of Management, Economics, Services, Information Technology, and Languages.

Many candidates seek advice before the deadline for university admissions.

Need to distinguish between floor score and benchmark score

According to university admissions experts, with the trend of a sharp decrease in floor scores, candidates need to pay attention to their university admission application choices and clearly identify that the floor score is only the minimum score that candidates need to achieve to be eligible for admission to a major or school.

Meanwhile, the benchmark is determined based on the quantity and quality of candidates registering for admission and the enrollment quota of each major and training program.

The fact that some schools have sharply reduced their admission threshold scores to expand the scope of admission does not mean that the benchmark scores will decrease, because the threshold scores are low, but the large number of candidates registering for admission is also likely to cause the benchmark scores to increase compared to 2024.

Dr. Truong Nguyen Luan Vu (Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education) advised candidates to carefully study the updated admission information from the school such as the floor score, the method of calculating admission scores, and how to convert scores between admission combinations of each major and training program they register to study.

In particular, candidates need to refer to the Ministry of Education and Training's percentile table, which schools use as a basis for converting between admission methods of each school. With this percentile, candidates know how much their score is equivalent to the score of other combinations, thereby choosing the major and school that suits their abilities.

It is noteworthy that universities are currently providing a table of score conversion between admission methods. Candidates should note that each school will have a different conversion method, so candidates have one score but different conversion results depending on each school the candidate registers for admission.

This is one of the difficulties for candidates applying for university admission this year when they need to clearly understand and grasp the information of each school to balance with their scores before finalizing their admission wishes at 5:00 p.m. on July 28, 2025.

Candidates can register, adjust, and add admission wishes an unlimited number of times until 5:00 p.m. on July 28, 2025.

From July 29 to 5:00 p.m. on August 5, 2025, candidates must pay the admission fee according to the number of admission wishes online according to the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Before 5:00 p.m. on August 30, 2025, all admitted candidates (including direct admitted candidates) must confirm their enrollment on the system (if they wish to study).

From September 1, 2025 to December 2025, candidates who need to apply for additional admission rounds of the training institution must follow the admission information posted on the training institution's admission information page.
