Promoting green, effective and sustainable tourism destination management models

On October 31, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Tourism Association held a consultation workshop on building the project "Effective tourism destination management model, towards a green tourism environment, no plastic waste and low carbon". The workshop attracted the participation of destination management units and many experts in the tourism field.

Speaking at the workshop, Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association Vu The Binh emphasized that tourism is an industry closely linked to the environment, so developing green tourism is an inevitable trend. However, in Vietnam, the gap between awareness and action in developing green tourism is still quite large.

In the period of 2023-2024, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Vietnam Tourism Association implemented the Project "Reducing plastic waste in the tourism sector in Vietnam" and achieved many positive results. This is the foundation for the association to continue implementing programs towards green tourism, typically the issuance of the VITA Green Criteria Set - Vietnam's first set of criteria on green tourism, meeting relatively fully international standards.

Chairman of Vietnam Tourism Association Vu The Binh spoke at the workshop.

Mr. Vu The Binh said that Vietnam is behind many countries in developing green tourism, so it is necessary to accelerate the process of transforming tourism activities towards green and sustainable direction. The Vietnam Tourism Association's proposal of the Project "Building an effective tourism destination management model with the participation of stakeholders, towards a green, plastic-free and low-carbon tourism environment", with the support of UNDP, is a concrete action to promote the development of green tourism in Vietnam.

"Destination management is a vital issue for the tourism industry, because destinations converge all tourism services. Focusing on building a green tourism destination model will cover all activities in a sustainable direction. This project also contributes to perfecting the necessary criteria to form a green tourism destination," the Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association emphasized.

The project "Building an effective tourism destination management model with the participation of stakeholders towards a green, plastic-free and low-carbon tourism environment" aims to build an integrated tourism destination management model with the participation of stakeholders, as a foundation for implementing, monitoring and evaluating green tourism development activities.

The project also focuses on communication and raising awareness among stakeholders including management agencies, businesses and communities about green transformation in tourism associated with biodiversity conservation and climate change response; at the same time, building a mechanism to replicate models, transfer knowledge, provide technical guidance and share experiences to localities across the country.

The project was piloted at Tay Yen Tu spiritual and ecological tourism area, Tay Yen Tu commune, Bac Ninh province, as a basis for replication nationwide.

The project consists of three main groups of activities. The first group focuses on raising awareness of green tourism for the private sector and local communities to implement an effective and sustainable destination management model. The second group builds a tourism destination management model according to green tourism criteria with the participation of authorities, businesses and local communities. The third group applies the low-carbon tourism model and implements the "Plastic Waste Free Tourism" criteria - the result of the "Reducing Plastic Waste in the Tourism Industry" Project - at the pilot destination.

In addition to enhancing the effectiveness of destination management, reducing plastic waste and carbon emissions, the project also aims to build a successful pilot green destination model; compile training materials on green transformation in tourism and sustainable destination management for businesses, communities and managers; and develop communication materials on the green, plastic-free and low-carbon tourism destination management model. The specific goal is for 80% of participating businesses to reduce plastic waste by at least 30%, and for at least 120 people to be trained on green tourism and green destination management.

The project outputs include: a set of green destination criteria issued; an effectively operating destination coordination board; a set of training and communication materials on green, plastic-free, low-carbon destinations; a destination management application developed and operated; and three result-sharing workshops.

Deputy Director of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Pham Van Thuy speaks at the Workshop

Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Pham Van Thuy affirmed that organizing the project consultation workshop is a practical activity to implement the National Strategy on Green Growth for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, as well as the National Action Plan on Green Growth for the same period.

Mr. Pham Van Thuy suggested that the Vietnam Tourism Association and relevant parties, in the process of completing the project, should focus on the following contents: surveying, evaluating and planning the exploitation of appropriate tourism resources; developing solutions for green tourism production, using renewable and environmentally friendly energy; developing tourism products associated with the conservation of nature and local culture; at the same time, promoting the practice of reducing waste, especially plastic waste, through the use of environmentally friendly materials, energy-saving technology, renewable energy and waste and emission control.

In addition, it is necessary to prioritize the development of environmentally friendly tourism types such as eco-tourism, community tourism, cultural tourism associated with conservation; integrate green elements in all activities of the destination; apply digital transformation in green tourism destination management and develop smart tourism destinations; and at the same time deploy methods of assessment, forecasting and risk response in sustainable tourism destination management.

In particular, it is necessary to improve the quality of tourism human resources and stakeholders, helping them gain awareness and deep understanding of the principles and goals of sustainable development to orient and form a green production cycle, meeting the green tourism consumption needs of tourists.

In the destination management model, it is also necessary to focus on propaganda and education on green and sustainable tourism, especially for the community, tourists and businesses, to form a green lifestyle and green tourism consumption habits.
