According to AFP, a man named Ankush Dutta booked a room at the Roseate House hotel in New Delhi, the Indian capital, on May 30, 2019 and was supposed to check out the next day.
But he extended his stay to 603 nights before leaving on January 22, 2021, leaving behind unpaid bills totaling $70,000.
The Roseate House Hotel, located near Indira Gandhi International Airport, has filed a lawsuit against the man.
"The invoices were fabricated to conceal the actual unpaid charges," the police statement said, quoted by the Indian Express .
Hotel managers have also filed a police complaint against several employees for criminal conspiracy, forgery and fraud. In the complaint, they said they suspect employees were bribed to alter information on the internal system.
According to the Economic Times , the person suspected of helping Mr. Dutta was Prem Prakash, the hotel's front office manager. Mr. Prakash had the power to decide room rates and had access to the hotel's internal system to track unpaid guest payments.
According to hotel policy, if a guest’s outstanding charges are pending for more than 72 hours, the CEO and CFO must be informed so that they can be informed and guided to resolve the issue. However, Mr Prakash did not report Mr Dutta’s case.
