A mid-table side that has been relegated to the Segunda Division twice and has regularly been outside the top 10 of La Liga over the past ten years, Osasuna has risen strongly in the 2022-2023 season, finishing 7th for the first time and qualifying for the Europa Conference League.
Osasuna delighted to return to European Cup after 16 years
However, the joy of the small Pamplona team was not complete when recently, UEFA based on the conclusion of the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Subcommittee to decide to remove Osasuna from the third-tier European Cup next season. The reason is that Osasuna was accused of match-fixing from the 2013-2014 season, meaning the incident happened ten years ago.
The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee's conclusion of the investigation stressed that Osasuna is not eligible to compete in the 2023-2024 UEFA Conference League despite having won the right to participate legally and fairly through the results of the competition in La Liga. UEFA affirmed that Osasuna's actions in the 2013-2014 season violated Article 4.1g of the Laws of the Game, according to which the team is "ineligible to participate in European competitions".
The joy has not yet subsided, sadness has come to Osasuna
The scandal referred to by UEFA, known as "Caso-Osasuna", involved the jailing of former club president Miguel Archanco and five former Osasuna directors. A Spanish court found that up to €650,000 (around £557,000) of club funds was paid to players from other teams to "help Osasuna achieve good results" in the 2013-14 season.
Osasuna said it would appeal the ban to the relevant courts, including the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Osasuna's statement said: "UEFA is only strong against the weak and always weak against the strong. UEFA's bodies have ignored the Spanish court's ruling that Osasuna was the victim of money transfers made by some of its former directors behind the backs of the highest governing bodies of La Liga, the Spanish Football Federation and the club's own control mechanisms."
Osasuna have said they are prepared for the worst but insist they will "never give up". The Pamplona club believe they "deserve to be at the top of La Liga and qualify for European competition" through their own efforts. According to Football Espana , the team ranked right behind Osasuna, Bilbao, are ready to replace them and participate in the Europa Conference League 2023-2024 if Osasuna's appeal is unsuccessful.
Osasuna will sue UEFA over unreasonable decision
The Europa Conference League has only been in existence for two seasons, with AS Roma and West Ham being the inaugural champions. Osasuna are upset at being "retroactively" punished for violations that were not part of the club's policy. They have struggled for nearly two decades to return to European competition, since their last participation and reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in the 2006-2007 season.
In its 103-year history, Osasuna has not won any domestic titles and in European competition, it has only participated in the UEFA Cup since the 1985-1986 season and participated in the Champions League qualifying round once.
