Yoga is known as a sport that trains the body's flexibility and endurance. In addition, practicing yoga is also a way to help people reduce stress, mental fatigue as well as make their personality more gentle.
Usually, yoga is held in private studios or separate locations to ensure a quiet space. From there, practitioners can focus on breathing as well as performing difficult movements.
Woman heavily criticized for practicing yoga at Gyeongbokgung Palace (Seoul, South Korea)
However, recently, some women have chosen public places to perform yoga movements. In early November, a clip of a woman wearing tight, colorful exercise clothes and doing the upside down movement on the fence of Gyeongbokgung Palace (Seoul, South Korea) went viral on the internet.
After the image went viral online, many people expressed their outrage at the woman's behavior. Some accounts commented: "This is self-expression, not yoga", "Really offensive", "It's ridiculous and offensive, I don't think it's beautiful at all", "Don't do that, people will misunderstand yoga and dislike it. I'm a yoga instructor but I don't even do that because it's weird. Yoga is about turning inward to listen to your body, controlling your breathing and balancing your mind, not to show off in public like this", "Please, yoga is for health and beauty and is suitable for the gym. Don't go out and do these poses anymore", "Practice at home in the gym or if you want a nice setting, rent a place with separate areas. Doing these moves in public is really offensive"...
The occupation of tourist sites for yoga practice or organizing yoga practice in the middle of the road has recently caused outrage among the community that loves this sport as well as the general public.
Previously, a yoga group also occupied the Fansipan landmark or the cloud hunting location in Da Lat, making it impossible for many tourists to take photos. In addition, a clip of a woman spreading a yoga mat on the road was also "dug up" and made many people angry. Most of these people practice not to exercise but to film clips and take photos to post on social networks.
Therefore, the online community wants sanctions for these inappropriate behaviors to avoid spoiling the beauty of public places and ensuring traffic safety on the road. Some accounts expressed their opinions: "Without such awareness, the family doesn't know, isn't there any measure to avoid harming society?", "No understanding and cultural awareness in public places", "Yoga is very good but there are people who exaggerate, beautiful but ignorant", "These people need to be severely punished", "Many actions like this have been condemned, but don't you read the newspaper?", "Authorities need to get involved because yoga has been very unstable lately"...
In May 2024, the Ngan Chau yoga group in Thai Binh province, consisting of 16 people, was fined VND200,000/person for practicing yoga in the middle of the road, ignoring the traffic, causing traffic obstruction and posing a potential risk to traffic safety.
