Good farmer

In 2018, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nong Son district implemented a scientific research project on tissue culture banana cultivation. This is a type of tree that can be grown on hilly land, replacing acacia trees and has high economic value. However, at that time, because it was a new model, many people did not dare to invest, a few households only planted a few trees in their home gardens.

Mr. Vo Hai - Head of Trung Nam residential group (formerly Village Chief) after harvesting 5ha of acacia, boldly registered with the commune and district to apply planting 2,000 tissue culture banana trees, applying new technical care methods. About 11 months later, Mr. Hai harvested 80 tons of commercial bananas. In the following crops, the yield increased 2-3 times.

When successfully applying the tissue culture banana model, Mr. Hai encouraged villagers to grow like him. He went to each house to provide technical guidance and support seedlings to help people save costs and limit risks.

Not only boldly applying scientific and technical advances in crop development, over the years, Mr. Vo Hai has also been an example of a good farmer, owning 20 hectares of acacia, 2,500 square ^{meters of} rice land, maintaining a cow breeding model and doing agricultural transportation and service business with 3 tractors, a pedicab, and a truck.

Mr. Hai shared: "First of all, I do business for myself and my family to benefit. In addition, this is also a way for me to set an example, affirming to the people that we can absolutely produce and do business well on our homeland. As long as we are diligent, hardworking and always set goals, our family will escape difficulties and our homeland will be rich and beautiful."

Passionate about developing the homeland

Although Trung Nam residential group has not yet invested in building a new model rural residential area, the people themselves have considered this a goal for many years. Mr. Vo Hai boldly proposed to the leaders of Trung Phuoc town, asking for resources from the policy mechanism in accordance with regulations on supporting materials such as concrete, sand and gravel to expand rural and intra-field traffic routes.

Mr. Hai registered with the town People's Committee about upgrading dirt roads to concrete, on main roads, widening 2.5m roads to 3m or 5m. Mr. Hai mobilized people to donate labor, land and structures on the land to construct the project, if the state supported materials. Up to now, in the Trung Nam residential area, the traffic roads have been solidified, 5m wide roads account for 40%, the rest are 3m wide roads.

"Since I became the village chief 17 years ago, there has not been any state project or construction in the area that has encountered any problems with site clearance. That is the pride of Trung Nam residential group. Because the projects are aimed at the common good, the people have responded with support. Some people have agreed to donate land but have not seen any construction for a long time and have come to my house to ask about it," said Mr. Hai.

In addition to daring to register and commit to implementing public works with the People's Committee of Trung Phuoc town, Mr. Hai also created prestige and connected people in the residential area. Up to now, 100% of the people in Trung Nam residential group have access to clean water. The operation and exploitation of this project has been very effective when the people have self-managed, self-collected, and self-spent in recent years.

In 2018, Mr. Vo Hai was awarded the "For the Vietnamese Farmer Class" Medal by the Central Executive Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union. For 10 consecutive years from 2004 to 2014, Mr. Hai was recognized by the Quang Nam Farmers' Union as a good farmer in production and business. He was also awarded a Certificate of Merit twice by the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for his outstanding achievements in contributing to the socio-economic development of the province.
