AFP reported that the incident occurred in the suburb of Nanterre, west of Paris on June 27. A teenager named Nael M. (17 years old) was shot dead while being stopped by two police officers for a check.

Police initially said the driver had hit them with his car, prompting the shooting. However, a video that has been circulated online and verified by police shows two officers standing by the driver's side of the car. The car is stationary, and one of the officers points a gun at the driver. A voice can be heard saying, "You're about to get a bullet in the head."

The officer then appeared to have opened fire at close range as the car suddenly sped away. The car crashed into a road sign about ten metres away and the driver died shortly afterwards.

There were two other people in the car but one ran away and the other, also a teenager, was detained.

The 38-year-old police officer who fired the fatal shot has been remanded in custody pending an investigation into manslaughter. The victim's lawyer, Yassine Bouzrou, said he would sue the officer for the charge and the other officer for complicity.

Prosecutors said on June 27 that the shooting occurred after the teenager refused to stop the car. The police officer opened fire on the young driver, who died shortly after, Reuters reported, citing a statement from the prosecutor's office.

Violent protests immediately broke out in the Paris suburbs. During the night, protesters set fire to objects and fired fireworks at police. Security forces also used tear gas in response.

What remains after the collision

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on June 28 that 31 people were arrested and 24 police officers were slightly injured in the clashes. About 40 cars and a school were burned. Mr. Darmanin said 2,000 police would be deployed to deal with the violence.

The incident has caused public outrage, prompting many politicians and celebrities to speak out.

Far-left politician Jean-Luc Melenchon called for a complete redesign of the police force while football superstar Kylian Mbappe tweeted his "sadness for France". "This is an unacceptable situation. My thoughts go out to the friends and family of Nael, our little angel who left us too soon," the Paris Saint-Germain player wrote.

Actor Omar Sy, known for his roles in films such as The Intouchables and Lupin, also hoped for justice for the dead teenager. Minister Darmanin said the video was "extremely shocking" and said the police officer would be suspended if the charges were upheld.

Government spokesman Olivier Veran said President Emmanuel Macron appeared emotional during a regular cabinet meeting on June 28 and called for calm.
