Peaceful village, safe people

At an altitude of over 1000 meters, the Achoong resettlement area, Ch'Om commune, Tay Giang is nestled in the midst of rolling white clouds, where the clouds embrace the village. The village has 32 households, 132 people, 100% of whom are Co Tu people. Here, the houses are built in a large circle, at the entrance of the village is a large yard and a gươl (community house) for children to play, play soccer, ride bicycles, and is also a place where people gather on festivals and Tet holidays.

Achoong resettlement area, Ch'Om commune, Tay Giang is clean, beautiful and modern in the middle of Tay Giang mountains and forests.

Receiving us in the mirror, the young village chief Alang Lo (35 years old) looked dreamily out the wooden window, recalling that in the past, people had the habit of living isolated in the middle of the forest. They built stilt houses along the slopes of the hills near the stream, always facing the risk of landslides.

More than 10 years ago, the government encouraged people to abandon their nomadic habits and return to a stable place to live, limiting damage caused by natural disasters. From there, many households sacrificed crops and trees to donate hectares of land to make a flat land for people from Achoong village to live. Ame (mother) To Ngol Chin donated 20,000 square meters of land to make a flat land. Once the village was established, cassava and corn fields were planned into rubber hills. The vacant land near the old residence was converted into rice fields. When people finished building new houses, the district "brought" car roads to the place, and then gradually the lighting system, self-flowing water, schools, medical stations... sprung up. The life of the people of Achoong improved significantly.

As one of 32 households building houses on the new village land, To Ngol Nhang (33 years old, in Achoong village), could not hide his joy when talking about his new life here. Nhang got married early but did not have his own land, so he had to live with his parents and younger siblings in a small house of only a few dozen square meters on the mountainside. Many times when it rained heavily, the land slid close to the wall, he and his relatives could only carry each other to take refuge elsewhere. Since moving to live in the spacious resettlement area, the family's life has been much more comfortable.

Tay Giang people are settled in safe villages.

“Last year, when we heard about landslides in many places in the highlands of Quang Nam burying many houses, people here suddenly remembered how they used to live on the hillsides and couldn’t help but feel scared. Now people in Achoong can do business in peace,” Nhang confided.

Leaving Achoong, we continued to cross winding mountain roads to reach remote villages such as Aur (A Vuong commune), Rabhuop (A Tieng commune) or Ga'nil (A xan)... all of which are bright spots in the work of arranging the population in the Tay Giang mountainous region. In addition to the effect of natural disaster prevention, the most obvious effect is that the appearance of the villages and hamlets has become more spacious, with concrete roads, electricity and water, and the living conditions of the people have become more stable. With a stable place to live, the people live together closely, work hard, take care of their children's education and have a strong belief in the Party and the State.

Keep the green of the great forest

Along with the work of reorganizing the population to mitigate natural disasters, Tay Giang attaches special importance to forest protection. District leaders always seriously implement the motto: If the forest remains, Tay Giang remains; if the forest declines, Tay Giang will also decline.

Under the forest canopy, people are associated with forest protection by exploiting rare and precious forest products for economic development. Therefore, in Tay Giang, forest coverage is up to 73%, in which the ancient po mu population in Zi'lieng mountain has many trees ranging in age from about 300 to 1,000 years old, recognized as Vietnam Heritage Trees. At the beginning of each new year, the Co Tu people in Tay Giang joyfully organize a Thanksgiving Forest Ceremony with many sacred rituals to thank Mother Nature for protecting and nurturing them.

In order to behave civilly with the forest, the Co Tu people in Tay Giang also reminded each other to carry out the campaign "Co Tu people use traditional products - say no to plastic waste", avoiding direct harm to the forest environment. The above activity originated from the Tay Giang District Women's Union launching the "Anti-plastic waste" movement to each female member and people in 10 communes of the district. The union bases in each commune and village also proactively built, registered to implement environmental protection models and replicated them in the area. Encourage members who are owners of food production and business establishments, restaurants, and small traders at markets to use environmentally friendly products instead of plastic bags. The Co Tu people live on nature, taking advantage of all natural materials to make houses, beds, and even cups for drinking water...

Mr. A Lang Sen, Head of Ta Lang Village, Bha Le Commune, Tay Giang District, shared: People have become more aware of environmental protection, to create sympathy with tourists from the beginning, while preserving the village's wild and pure features, which are the strengths for developing tourism here. "Limiting and saying no to plastic waste not only creates sympathy and ensures a clean environment for tourists when coming to Tay Gang, but in the long term, it is also to preserve and protect the natural, wild and pure environment, which is the strength for developing tourism here." - said the village elder.

From a district with a high rate of poor households, "no electricity, roads, schools, or stations", Tay Giang district has now overcome difficulties to become a model for community-based population arrangement and forest protection and management.

From the pilot model in Por'ning, up to now, Tay Giang district has continued to plan and select concentrated areas for 63 villages with 117 stable residential areas in 10 communes. This breakthrough has brought more than 4,690 households solid houses, and villages hanging on mountains and forest holes have been removed to safe places. The planning of concentrated residential areas helps to gather land and concentrate labor resources to effectively implement poverty reduction projects and socio-economic development.
