On the morning of July 20, Vietnamese-American pickleball prodigy Quang Duong (real name Duong Thien Quang) and his family were present in Hanoi to attend the launch ceremony of pickleball competition shoes.

Here, Mr. Duy Duong, Quang Duong's father, shared with the press about his son's journey, after Quang Duong terminated his contract with the United States Pickleball Administration (UPA).

Previously, UPA claimed that the Vietnamese-American tennis player ranked 6th in the world violated the exclusive commercial contract by not attending their tournament without prior notice. Specifically, Quang Duong was absent from the Major League Pickleball (MLP) tournament held in Grand Rapids, Michigan from July 9 to 13, but on July 12, he appeared at the event taking place in Khanh Hoa.

"I train Quang Duong, helping him rise from zero. I have a training plan to improve the skills of both Quang Duong and Bao Duong (Duong Thien Bao, Quang Duong's younger brother). I want them to develop fully, naturally, without rushing because they are both very young.

In the near future, Quang Duong will compete internationally a lot, with a busy schedule and many new tournaments. I can't reveal it yet, but Quang Duong will update it on his personal page soon. Whether he plays or not in the US, it's still the same, the three of us will go out to the field and practice together. If Quang Duong can meet the training requirements with me, he will be strong enough to overcome any tournament.

Currently, Asian countries are just at the beginning of the development of pickleball, the level of athletes will be much higher. Quang Duong is only 19 years old, and Bao Duong is 14 years old. They need time to shine around the world," Mr. Duy Duong shared about his son's schedule.

'Vietnam can become a pickleball powerhouse'

Mr. Duy Duong, father of pickleball prodigy Quang Duong, added: "Pickleball has just arrived in Vietnam. In the beginning, the movement in Hanoi and Da Nang developed strongly, unlike now when there are many pickleball courts and athletes. I think pickleball in Vietnam has only gone 5, 10% and still has a lot of potential to develop.

If we have a vision, Vietnam will become a pickleball powerhouse. Vietnam has just developed pickleball but a lot of foreign resources have been invested in. We need solidarity and create associations to protect athletes and the pickleball movement. The level of Vietnamese athletes has also improved a lot. However, we can play well domestically, but we have to go far. Hopefully, Vietnamese athletes will step out into the world and reach new heights."

Quang Duong (full name Duong Thien Quang) is a pickleball prodigy of Vietnamese and American descent. At the age of 19, Quang Duong was ranked 4th in the world in the 2024 year-end rankings and was the youngest player in the world's top 20.

3 years ago, Quang Duong unfortunately suffered a wrist injury so he played pickleball as a way to recover.

However, he found joy and realized his ability in this new sport, so he competed and achieved continuous success. From then on, Quang Duong decided to play pickleball professionally by signing a contract to compete for PPA (Professional Pickleball Association).

In August 2024, Quang Duong won the world championship at the IHG Briston Open 2024. Or at the Hyundai Masters 2024 held in the US, this tennis player caused a shock when he defeated the world's number 1 tennis player - Ben Johns.

Mr. Duong Duy, Quang Duong's father, is a person who has a great influence on his son's career, not only directly training the two Quang Duong brothers, but also guiding the path and supporting his son in building his brand.

"Thank you, Dad, Mom and teachers, for always accompanying and guiding me from a young age. When I was little, I didn't like to play. However, when I grew up, I realized that everyone only wanted the best for me, when I was quiet and listened to Dad. Thank you for always being there with me no matter the rain or wind," Quang Duong affirmed.
