What did Quang Duong's father say when his son left the American pickleball system?

Mr. Duy Duong, father of pickleball prodigy Quang Duong, shared about his son's upcoming journey in Vietnam and internationally.

'Quang Dương needs time to shine'

On the morning of July 20th, Vietnamese-born pickleball prodigy Quang Duong (real name Duong Thien Quang) and his family were present in Hanoi to attend the launch ceremony of a new pickleball shoe product.

Here, Mr. Duy Duong, Quang Duong's father, shared with the press about his son's journey after Quang Duong terminated his contract with the U.S. Pickleball Administration (UPA).

Previously, the UPA alleged that the world No. 6 Vietnamese-American tennis player violated an exclusive commercial contract by failing to participate in their tournaments without prior notice. Specifically, Quang Duong was absent from the Major League Pickleball (MLP) tournament held in Grand Rapids, Michigan from July 9 to 13, but on July 12, he appeared at an event in Khanh Hoa.

"I coached Quang Duong, helping him rise from nothing. I have a training plan to improve the skills of both Quang Duong and Bao Duong (Duong Thien Bao, Quang Duong's younger brother). I want them to develop fully and naturally, without rushing, because they are both very young."

In the near future, Quang Duong will be competing internationally in many tournaments, with a packed schedule of new competitions. I can't reveal the details yet, but Quang Duong will update his personal page soon. Whether he competes in the US or not, it's still the three of us training together. If Quang Duong performs well during this training period, he will be strong enough to overcome any competition.

Currently, Asian countries are only in the early stages of developing pickleball, and the skill level of athletes will improve significantly. Quang Duong is only 19 years old, and Bao Duong is 14. They need time to shine around the world," Mr. Duy Duong shared about his son's schedule.

'Vietnam has the potential to become a pickleball powerhouse'

Mr. Duy Duong, father of pickleball prodigy Quang Duong, further shared: "Pickleball has only recently arrived in Vietnam. In the beginning, the movement developed strongly in Hanoi and Da Nang , unlike now when there are many courts and pickleball players. I think pickleball in Vietnam has only progressed 50-10% and still has a lot of potential for development."

With vision, Vietnam could become a pickleball powerhouse. Vietnam is still developing pickleball, yet a lot of foreign investment has poured in. We need a spirit of unity, creating an association to protect athletes and the pickleball movement. The skill level of Vietnamese athletes has also improved significantly. However, while we can compete well domestically, we must also go further. Hopefully, Vietnamese athletes will step onto the world stage and reach new heights."

Quang Duong (full name Duong Thien Quang) is a pickleball prodigy of Vietnamese and American descent. At the age of 19, Quang Duong was ranked 4th in the world at the end of 2024 and was the youngest player in the top 20 in the world.

Three years ago, Quang Duong unfortunately suffered a wrist injury, so he started playing pickleball as a way to recover.

However, he found joy and recognized his potential in this new sport, so he competed and achieved continuous success. From there, Quang Duong decided to play pickleball professionally by signing a contract with the PPA (Professional Pickleball Association).

In August 2024, Quang Duong won the world championship at the IHG Bristol Open 2024. Similarly, at the Hyundai Masters 2024 held in the US, this player caused a shock by defeating world number 1 Ben Johns.

Mr. Duong Duy, Quang Duong's father, has had a significant influence on his son's career, not only directly coaching the two brothers but also guiding their path and supporting them in building their brand.

"Thank you to my parents and teachers for always guiding and supporting me from childhood to adulthood. When I was little, I didn't like playing. However, as I grew older, I realized that everyone only wanted what was best for me, especially when I was quiet and listened to my father. Thank you for always being there for me on the field, rain or shine," Quang Duong affirmed.
