Salted egg sponge cake is becoming a "specialty" snack of Vung Tau, chosen by many tourists as a gift when coming to this coastal land.

Competition between bakeries is quiet but fierce.

Talking about Vung Tau salted egg sponge cake, we cannot help but mention Cay Cot Dien bakery - one of the brands considered to be the oldest and most famous among tourists .

Mr. Ngoc Duy, owner of Cay Cot Dien pancake establishment, shared that since 1968, his mother has been selling sandwiches and sponge cakes at Ben Dinh market, not here.

Around 2000, he followed his mother's career, opening a small cake cart opposite the Banh Khot shop at Goc Vu Sua right at Cay Cot Dien. Customers came to eat Banh Khot, and conveniently bought a few boxes of salted egg sponge cake to eat or as gifts.

When the business was stable, in 2019, Mr. Duy upgraded the cake production facility to be more modern and professional. The cake boxes and packaging were noticed.

He said: "I spent a fair amount of money with the hope that this place will become a destination for tourists coming to Vung Tau to visit and buy salted egg sponge cake as gifts."

In the Cay Cot Dien shop, uniformed staff take cakes and advise customers right next to the skillful baker who bakes the cakes directly, helping customers visualize the traditional way of making cakes.

Ms. Anh Quynh, 27 years old, living in Bay Hien ward, Ho Chi Minh City, said that every time she and her friends come to Vung Tau, they choose to buy salted egg sponge cake as gifts.

"Vung Tau salted egg sponge cake is spongy, soft, has an eggy aroma, is not too sweet, and has a rich, fatty taste of salted eggs. Shops are catching on to the trend of young people very quickly.

Every time I go to the store, I see the cake menu getting longer so that customers have more choices. In my opinion, in addition to the sponge cake, the sauce and topping of the cake are the 'key' to attracting young people."

On a fanpage introducing Vung Tau, a person posted a picture of customers lining up to buy cakes and wrote:

"Why is this bakery always so crowded? The one next door is empty. If we swapped boxes between the two shops, would the customers know?"

This comment received many responses. Each comment has its own point of view, no two are the same.

These two bakeries are Golden and Davi located next to each other on Le Hong Phong street.

Golden was established in 2015 and is popular among young people because of its wide variety of dishes. There are 28 types of salted egg sponge cakes. The price of the cakes is a few thousand dong cheaper than other bakeries, which is also an advantage. Currently, Golden has three branches.

Although it may be less crowded than Golden at some times, Davi is no slouch. With a wide variety of cakes, this bakery brand has 12 branches, including 7 stores on the bustling Hoang Hoa Tham street, which is always crowded with tourists.

Besides Cay Cot Dien, Golden, Davi, there are currently dozens of salted egg sponge cake brands in Vung Tau.

There are salted egg sponge cakes from A Ty, Nguyen Hoang, Tan Phat, Anh Tuan, Ngoc Hiep... each brand has from one to several branches creating a "matrix" of salted egg sponge cakes in Vung Tau.

Traditional Vung Tau salted egg sponge cake costs from 25,000 to 30,000 VND/box (9 - 10 small pieces).

There are also salted egg sponge cakes with other toppings and sauces, priced from 35,000 to 60,000 VND/box.

The price is not too high, it is compact and easy to carry, and suits the taste of most people, so Vung Tau salted egg sponge cake is a snack that attracts many people, especially young people.
