Mont-Saint-Michel is a small island off the coast of Normandy, famous for its 8th-century abbey.
From 966, the Dukes of Normandy and later French kings continuously built, extended and expanded the size of the monastery on the island. In the following centuries, countless magnificent structures were built.
Thanks to its stunning beauty, Mont-Saint-Michel has become one of the major pilgrimage destinations in Europe today. The island was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979.
Most of the island’s structures are built of granite, with only a few monasteries made of limestone. Inside the monasteries, you can admire elaborate statues and sculptures.
Despite the high tourist numbers, only about 30 people actually live on the island. Visitors are advised to respect the privacy of the island’s residents when visiting, and to limit or completely avoid taking photos of them.
One special thing is that visitors can only get here by walking when the tide changes, and this place will turn into an island when the water rises.
In addition, the island also has a diverse cuisine. There are two dishes that visitors must try when coming here: "omelette à la mère Poulard" and "salted lamb" (mouton de pré-salé). These two dishes have consumed countless pages of ink from travel enthusiasts.
