VCPMC said that IME Vietnam - the organizer of the Blackpink concert in Hanoi - promised to pay royalties before 12 noon on July 29.
A day earlier, information from VCPMC (Vietnam Center for Music Copyright Protection) suggested recall Blackpink concert license in Hanoi due to copyright infringement attracts attention.
At the meeting on July 26, VCPMC decided to calculate the copyright fee as: 5% of the total revenue of 20,000 tickets. The ticket price for a show in Vietnam ranges from 1.2 million to 9.8 million VND, if calculated at an average of 5.5 million VND, the amount IME must pay to VCMPC is estimated at about 11 billion VND. According to VCPMC, when IME representatives proposed support, they agreed to reduce the total amount by about 10-15%.
IME said it would report to the leaders of partner company YG Entertainment - the management unit of Blackpink group, because the songs in the show are all copyrighted by YG.
In other countries, IME said they pay royalties at a rate of about 1.5-3% x average ticket price x a portion of capacity (not exceeding 70%). According to Mr. Pham Dinh Tam, the initial royalties calculated by VCPMC are much higher than those of other countries in the region. In Thailand and Malaysia, royalties are about 200,000 - 250,000 USD (about 4.7 billion to more than 5.9 billion VND).
VCPMC claims IME royalties under the mandate of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA). Songs licensed for performance by the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports are all copyrighted by KOMCA.
This unit sent a document on July 21, granting VCPMC the right to license the public performance rights for all musical works in the KOMCA repertoire performed on the territory of VCPMC, including but not limited to works composed by KOMCA member authors. VCPMC is the only party in Vietnam at this time to be granted the right.
KOMCA was founded in 1964 and is a non-profit organization that protects copyrights of musical works and manages broadcasting and performance rights for songs. KOMCA became a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization in 1979. According to the association's website, KOMCA's role is to manage copyrights of music products on behalf of more than 30,000 members of the association. Many famous singers are members of this association, such as Suga, RM, J-Hop (BTS), Woozi (SEVENTEEN), IU.
