Snakehead fish weighing nearly 2.8 kg won first prize in the contest for the biggest snakehead fish.

As part of the U Minh Forest Fragrance event series in 2023, on April 27, at U Minh Ha National Park (HU Minh, Ca Mau), the biggest snakehead fish competition took place, attracting a large number of people and tourists.

The contest attracted more than 10 contestants with 15 snakehead fish eligible to compete. According to the organizers, each contestant was allowed to register 1 traditional snakehead fish that was the largest and healthiest to compete. The organizers also prepared native wild snakehead fish as samples for the judges to compare.

The snakehead fish that won first prize weighed nearly 3 kg.

The judges divided the number of rounds according to the time allowed; each round called 10 contestants in turn to pour the fish into a basin to check and compare the same snakehead fish, thereby eliminating from the competition those that did not meet the requirements, then using a scale to determine the weight of the fish.

After summarizing the rounds, the contestant with the heaviest fish will be selected to announce the winner from high to low. In case there are many contestants with fish of equal weight, the referee will draw lots to choose the winner.

Contest fish must be native snakehead fish.

Contestants must be native wild snakehead fish (also known as traditional wild fish). All hybrid or foreign snakehead fish, even if raised naturally, are not allowed to compete, such as: snakehead fish with protruding lips, square-headed snakehead fish, and flower-shaped snakehead fish... Traditional wild snakehead fish will have thin, black scales, and larger scales than farmed fish; in addition, the head of wild snakehead fish is also slimmer and smoother.

After a competition, the organizers selected the biggest snakehead fish weighing nearly 2.8 kg, 1 second prize, 2 third prizes and 2 consolation prizes.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dien (residing in Hamlet 3, Khanh Binh Tay Bac Commune, Tran Van Thoi District, Ca Mau), the owner of the largest snakehead fish, shared that about a week ago, he went to visit the field and discovered a school of young snakehead fish, so he used a hook to catch a fish weighing nearly 3 kg. When he heard that U Minh Ha National Park had a competition for the largest snakehead fish, he kept the fish to compete.
