According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, the export turnover to this market in 2024 reached nearly 45 million USD, an increase of 5 times compared to 2020, reaching the highest level in the past 10 years. In the first 3 months of 2025 alone, tuna exports to this market reached more than 10 million USD, an increase of 15% compared to the same period in 2024.
Ms. Nguyen Ha - tuna market expert of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that in the current context, Vietnam and Russia have many advantages and opportunities for economic and trade cooperation. Specifically, Vietnam and Russia are two complementary economies. Vietnam has a need to import Russian products to serve production and consumption. Meanwhile, Russia imports tropical agricultural products, seafood, food, etc. from Vietnam.
Besides, Russia is also one of the 30 largest tuna import markets in the world . Russian tuna imports are increasing every year, the value of tuna imports has doubled in just 5 years, reaching nearly 90 million USD in 2023.
A series of barriers that have caused difficulties for businesses such as transportation, payment, travel procedures... are being removed. Goods exported from Vietnam to Russia can use the direct sea route Vladivostok-Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City with a transit time of about 8-11 days; or the international railway route from Vietnam through China, Kazakhstan and then to Moscow with a transit time of about 35-40 days.
Payments are also more flexible as both sides can use rubles and Vietnamese dong in bilateral transactions. Russia's issuance of 15-day e-visas to Vietnamese citizens also creates conditions for businessmen of the two countries to meet and expand trade connections.
In addition, Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union, of which Russia is a member, signed a Free Trade Agreement in 2015. This Agreement has been in effect since October 2016. To date, most import and export goods between the two countries enjoy 0% or very low import tax rates. Businesses of the two countries need to actively take advantage of the favorable conditions brought by the Agreement to promote bilateral trade and investment.
However, to export goods to the Russian market stably and avoid disputes related to quality, trade counselors recommend that Vietnamese enterprises need to carefully research and ensure compliance with local regulations on quality, packaging, labeling, etc. for products.
