When mentioning Chieng Co commune, people not only know about the famous delicious Tam Hoa plum, but also know that this is the tree that helps people here eliminate hunger, reduce poverty, and help the locality complete the construction of advanced new rural areas.
Mr. Ca Trung Hoa, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Co commune, said that, implementing the policy of converting crop structure, Chieng Co people have boldly abandoned low-yield corn and cassava fields to cultivate plum and three-flower plum trees; in which, three-flower plum has brought high economic profits.
With active support from agricultural engineers, people have gradually mastered advanced science and technology in each stage of cultivation to increase productivity.

“Plum trees have been planted by Chieng Co people for a long time, but by 2022, people will learn how to take care of them scientifically and invest in automatic irrigation systems to help plum trees grow well and produce bumper crops, helping many households escape poverty and become rich,” said Mr. Hoa.
We visited Mr. Tong Van Hoan, Chieng Co commune, when he was taking care of his 1.5 hectare plum garden after harvest. Mr. Hoan said that to continue having bumper crops, after harvest he must take care of and water the trees so that they grow well.
"This three-flower plum tree is very suitable for our land, it produces a lot of fruit and sells for a good price. Thanks to that, my family has enough to eat and no longer has to worry about poverty like before," Mr. Hoan shared.

Leaving Mr. Hoan's house, we went to Mr. Tong Van Kien's house (Chieng Co commune). It is known that his family used to be poor, but since 2022, he has boldly invested in an automatic irrigation system, applied modern farming methods to develop fruit trees, especially nearly 2 hectares of Tam Hoa plum trees, which have helped his family have a prosperous economy.
“To have a stable yield of plum trees, it is necessary to water them sufficiently to help them grow well. Since investing in an automatic irrigation system and drip irrigation, I harvest over 16 tons of plums each year, bringing in a profit of 150 million VND,” Mr. Kien shared.
Mr. Ca Trung Hoa said that in 2021, the commune sent a number of farming households to learn from experience in Moc Chau town, Yen Chau district (Son La province); in particular, they learned how to use drip irrigation, which helps save water and keep plum trees green all year round, giving delicious fruit.

"The important thing is that we have to study hard and apply science and technology to care for both types of plants, then both of these plants will yield high yields. Intercropping like this both makes use of the land and increases economic efficiency," said Mr. Kien.
The delicious Tam Hoa plum is popular with many people, especially in big cities and provinces. Mr. Lo Van Thuong, the owner of a long-standing plum purchasing facility in the commune, shared that during the main season, his facility purchases about 2-3 tons of plums every day to supply to the provinces: Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Vinh Phuc, and Hanoi.
People harvest plums and consume them as they go, and send them to the lowlands for consumption at a stable price of 20,000-25,000 VND/kg.
