AirPods are wireless Bluetooth earbuds created by Apple, first released on December 13, 2016. A second generation with improved battery life was released on March 20, 2019.
AirPods are Apple's most popular accessory, with 35 million units sold in 2018 alone.
One day you connect your AirPods and feel like only one side of the headset is working. What to do? Follow the steps below:
Try putting the AirPods back in the charging case
Stay calm and try putting both AirPods back in the charging case. Then use them as normal. A seemingly simple method that is extremely effective.
Check if your AirPods are charged
Each AirPods headset will have a separate battery life, the error of AirPods only working on one side may come from the cause of one of the two headsets being low or out of battery, causing it to turn off.
So, you need to check if AirPods are charged, through 3 ways:
Method 1: Open the lid of the AirPods charging case and place it near your iPhone or iPad, the device screen will show you the battery percentage for your AirPods. To know the battery life of each AirPods headset, just lift 1 of the 2 headphones from the charging case.
Method 2: Check the battery in AirPods Bluetooth settings.
Method 3: Add the battery widget to the home screen. You can completely determine the battery of AirPods at all times when applying this method without accessing anywhere. You hold down on the home screen, click the "+" sign, then find the battery, select add widget and press "Done".
If your AirPods are indeed dead, you should charge them immediately. If the problem persists and you can only hear sound from one side of your AirPods, try the next method.
Cleaning AirPods
Dusty AirPods and charging case will affect the sound quality or it will not work. Clean both AirPods and charging case, you will see surprising results.
Disconnect and reconnect AirPods to iPhone
One of the main reasons for AirPods issues is poor Bluetooth connectivity. In this case, simply disconnect and reconnect your AirPods to your device. There are two quick ways to disconnect:
Method 1: Turn off Bluetooth on iPhone, wait a moment, then turn it back on and reconnect to AirPods.
Method 2: You can access "Settings", select "Bluetooth", go to the "i" icon, click "Disconnect", and reconnect to AirPods.
Check sound settings on iPhone
On Apple devices like iPhone, iPad, MacBook, there is a stereo balance setting. You can adjust the sound to the left or right. So, if the AirPods can only hear on one side, it is likely because you have accidentally adjusted this mode. Here is how to fix it:
Go to "Settings" then move to "Accessibility", then click on "Sound/Visual", move the slider between the letters T and P, so the sound of each headset will be balanced.
Reset AirPods
Step 1: Go to "Settings" select "Bluetooth", click on the i icon, then select "Forget device", click "Forget device" again to confirm.
Step 2: Place both AirPods in your charging case. Close the lid, wait 30 seconds, then open it.
Step 3: Press and hold the settings button (on the back of the AirPods) for a few seconds until you see the white LED flashing, reconnect to the iPhone by bringing the AirPods close and opening the lid.
Take to Apple repair center
If you have tried all the above methods and still cannot fix the error, your AirPods may have a hardware problem. For the best support, you should bring your AirPods to reputable or genuine Apple repair centers.
