All-round Rookie can be considered a reality TV motif that is rarely deployed in Vietnam. Previously, the program model dedicated to selecting idol groups like this could only be counted on the fingers like Bright with life (girl group recruitment) or Vote for five (recruiting boy bands). However, these shows did not create much buzz, and after these two shows, no boy bands were formed.
All-round Rookie With a large investment in image and communication, it is expected to change the face of this type of program and spread the concept of "idol" more widely in the Vpop market.
After an individual and a group test, the level of the contestants in the program has been polarized. However, to reach the word "omnipotent" as in the name of the program, no one has been able to do it, the contestants are still mainly inclined towards a certain specialty.
Potential but not omnipotent
All-round Rookie has a structure quite similar to other idol selection programs in China or Korea, which is casting to select trainees, placing them in classes based on their abilities, then training and competing to select the best members for a group. With a format that focuses entirely on the contestants, the coaches and judges mainly play the role of trainers, so the trainees' abilities play a decisive role.
However, there is one characteristic that makes the Vpop market different from Kpop or Cpop, which is that the concept of idols is not yet widely popular, and music groups are not popular. The prominent names today are all solo singers. Therefore, Vpop does not have professional idol training "furnaces" like in other major music industries in Asia.
Candidates of All-round Rookie This lack of training is clearly evident. Most of you are "outsiders", if you have any, you have been trained in an academic music environment or come from dance troupes, and the other skills of an idol must be self-taught and cultivated.
It can be seen that when watching the first performances of this show's motif in Korea or China, the contestants were quite complete, even from the casting round, the audience could "name and shame" a few factors that were likely to debut in the end. For example, Kim Sejeong in Produce 101 first season or Jang Won Young in season Produce 48 was very outstanding, ranked in class A after the preliminary round and continuously ranked in the top 3 in the program until debuting thanks to his very even and shining vocal - performance - visual skills.
Back All-round rookie , after the preliminary round, only 4 contestants were able to enter class B, no contestant could reach class A. After the group test round in episode 4, only Pham Van Tam could reach class A but it also caused controversy among the audience and among the contestants themselves. That shows the quality of the contestants of All-round Rookie meeting the requirements of an international idol is not high.
The contestants showed a lack of consistency in their skills. Contestants with good voices like Huu Son and Van Chung performed poorly, even not being able to control their bodies on stage, with many unnecessary movements. Contestants who were highly rated for their performance like Cuong Bach and Kim Bao did not perform well in their vocals. Contestants with outstanding visuals like Minh Hieu and Kai Do did not even impress with their singing and dancing skills.
There are still contestants who have good performances and have made a lot of progress. Pham Van Tam is a contestant who was "rescued" from episode 3 but unexpectedly quickly rose in rank and became the only one to enter class A. Phuc Nguyen, who originally came from the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, has a good vocal but has improved in performance to continuously rise in rank in the program.
Dong Quan and Minh Quan are two contestants with stable performances, without any significant mistakes. However, no one has been able to make the audience admire their abilities or changes. Theme song performance Show Me In the top 30, the audience can still clearly see the mistakes in the movements of some contestants, and the uniformity is not high.
After 4 episodes, no performance has really gone viral on social networks, the interest mainly comes from the contestants' fan community. That makes Rookie All-rounder not as successful as expected.
The audience started to get interested.
The quality of the contestants is one part, but the production team also contributes to making viewers lose interest in the show. Right from the first episodes, the audience had to "cry out" about the confusing editing when it almost did not air the casting parts of the contestants but only showed the judges' analysis, evaluation, and selection. Viewers did not see the performance, so it was difficult to keep up and understand what the judges were commenting on.
Only a few performances were shown, but they were not outstanding performances or performances by high-ranking contestants, it was almost random. Only contestant Van Chung’s performance was shown in detail, mainly to “draw” tears, not because of his ability, because in the end he was only placed in class D.
In addition, the roles of Toc Tien, Kay Tran and Soobin have not been clarified. From the beginning, the program announced that these are 3 all-powerful producers who will contribute to selecting and training the contestants, but after 4 episodes with 2 examinations, the appearance of the 3 singers is very faint. Instead, ST is the one who appears in the cleaning sessions and gives the main comments, while in the training sessions, the Korean trainee as well as singers Thao Trang and Tien Dat are the ones who teach the contestants.
However, in episode 4 of the show, the audience started to get interested when the first contestants had to leave the show, making the drama increase. In addition, the remake of 2 songs Late Autumn and Beautiful Girl is also highly appreciated. With the close participation of veteran producer SlimV, the audience expects the music of the show to be well handled and create resonance and virality in the upcoming episodes.
