Representatives of the Laos-China Railway Company (LCRC) proposed the Cambodia-Laos high-speed railway project during a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Vientiane during his two-day official visit to Laos, according to the Khmer Times today, March 28. LCRC is a joint venture based in the Lao capital Vientiane.

Welcoming the LCRC initiative, Mr. Hun Manet has suggested that the company work with the Royal Railway Company of Cambodia, according to Khmer Times, quoting Vice President of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce Lim Heng.

"Prime Minister Hun Manet has asked the company to work with Mr. Kith Meng, President of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, whose company is the Royal Railway in Cambodia," Mr. Heng stressed.

However, there are no further details on how the Cambodia-Laos high-speed railway connection will be implemented. Currently, there is no direct railway connecting Cambodia and Laos, while the number of railway lines in the two countries has increased.

The railway between Cambodia and Laos was discussed by former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone in Phnom Penh in February 2023.

Cambodia currently has two railway lines, Phnom Penh-Poipet and Phnom Penh-Preah Sihanouk. This railway network is under the management of the Royal Railway Company, a subsidiary of the Royal Group (Cambodia), according to Khmer Times .
