Cambodia makes shocking ruling on SEA Games 33

The Thai Olympic Committee held a meeting to announce the number of athletes participating in the 33rd SEA Games. Notably, the Cambodian delegation withdrew almost all of its athletes.

The meeting summarized information on preparations for the 33rd SEA Games. This event will include 50 sports and 574 events. The host team sent the strongest force, with 2,134 people competing. They participated in all sports, with the number that can be said to be the largest ever.

Malaysia is currently the second largest team in terms of the number of athletes. They have registered 1,824 people, Singapore 1,973 and 863. Countries including Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei and Timor-Leste have not been able to finalize their list so they have asked for a 2-week extension.

At the meeting on August 4, Mr. Thana Chaiprasit, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, gave shocking information about the Cambodian sports delegation. Previously, Cambodia confirmed that it would send 1,515 athletes to compete. However, with the latest developments, this country has reduced the number to only 57 people.

It is not ruled out that Cambodia will withdraw from football participation at the 33rd SEA Games.

Thus, Cambodia decided to cancel the opportunity to participate in the 33rd SEA Games of… 96% of the number of athletes. This huge number brought a huge surprise. It is not excluded that the remaining 57 athletes will most likely not participate in men's football or the arrangement of the tables and competition format will be affected.

In recent days, some Thai sports officials have openly discussed the idea of banning Cambodia from the 33rd SEA Games. Mr. Soravong Thianthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports of Thailand, once emphasized that he was "concerned about the safety of Cambodian athletes competing in Thailand". But this possibility will not happen.

During the meeting, the Thai Olympic Committee confirmed the above information. Because if they ban a country from competing, they will violate the Olympic Charter. The Cambodian side also confirmed that they will not withdraw from the 33rd SEA Games.
