DNVN - Alongside the advantages and achievements, science and technology and innovation in the Mekong Delta region in general, and Ben Tre in particular, still face many difficulties, shortcomings, and limitations. This reality demands that the region's science and technology sector make breakthroughs, develop strongly, and strengthen its potential to meet the expectations of the Party, the State, and the people.

At the 27th Mekong Delta Regional Science and Technology Conference held in Ben Tre on the morning of June 14th, Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat stated that, looking back at the past period, the science and technology and innovation activities of the provinces and cities in the region have achieved many remarkable results.

Many mechanisms and policies supporting scientific research, application, and technological innovation have been issued and put into practice. The creative startup ecosystem has formed and developed rapidly. Many science and technology solutions for flexible response to climate change have been organized and implemented.

"It can be said that research and application of technological advancements have become increasingly linked to practical production, contributing to the socio -economic development of each locality and the entire region. State management in the fields of science and technology has also been implemented synchronously and is becoming increasingly effective," Minister Huynh Thanh Dat assessed.

However, according to the head of the Ministry of Science and Technology, alongside the advantages and achievements, science and technology and innovation in the Mekong Delta region still face many difficulties, shortcomings, and limitations. Therefore, much work needs to be done, and more decisive and substantive actions are necessary to truly contribute effectively to socio-economic development, national defense and security, and the building of a strong political system at the local and regional levels.

Chairman of the Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee, Tran Ngoc Tam, shared that the Mekong Delta region, including Ben Tre, still faces many difficulties and challenges due to the negative impacts of climate change such as tidal surges, saltwater intrusion, extreme weather, riverbank erosion, etc. Along with that, prices and markets for goods, especially agricultural products, are unstable...

Despite its outstanding achievements, Ben Tre still faces weaknesses that hinder the development of science and technology. These include a slow pace of innovation in the management of science and technology activities within some management agencies and even among the science and technology staff. Policies also lack coordination between businesses and the research sector, leading to limitations in the commercialization of research products.

Furthermore, the immense challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution are gradually eliminating the advantages of experience, spontaneous management methods, and old business models. The global situation remains complex and unpredictable…

According to Chairman Tran Ngoc Tam, the current context demands that science and technology in Ben Tre must make breakthroughs, develop strongly, and strengthen its potential to meet the expectations of the Party, the State, and the people.

Ben Tre province always desires to cooperate with the Ministry of Science and Technology, as well as other provinces, in the field of science and technology in particular, and other fields in general, to address the challenges posed by climate change and leverage the advantages of the Mekong Delta. This will promote the overall development of the region, contributing to the development of science and technology and the socio-economic development of the country.

For Ben Tre province, the provincial leadership will always stand alongside scientists, always creating favorable conditions in all aspects for the science and technology sector to develop in the best, most comprehensive, sustainable, and modern way.

At the conference, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the People's Committee of Ben Tre province also signed a cooperation program on science, technology and innovation activities for the period 2024 - 2030.

Leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology, together with leaders of Ben Tre province, launched the implementation of 7 geographical indications that have been granted registration certificates by the Intellectual Property Office.

During the program, the Intellectual Property Office also announced and granted geographical indication registration certificates for seven key products of Ben Tre province, including: durian, freshwater prawn, four-season mango, sea crab, rambutan, rice, and clams.

Thus, along with green Siamese coconut and green-skinned pomelo, Ben Tre has successfully established geographical indications for 9 key products of the province, leading the Mekong Delta region in geographical indication protection.

The Ministry of Science and Technology also awarded the "For the Cause of Science and Technology" commemorative medal to six individuals from Ben Tre province who have made significant contributions to science and technology activities, innovation in state management, application of science and technology in practice, education and training, agriculture, and industry, contributing to increased labor productivity and socio-economic development of the locality.
