Port with great potential
Returning to Chan May port on a day in May, we witnessed the excitement, with the traffic infrastructure here being connected, many large ships lining up to dock; large and small vehicles lining up to go in and out to "buy goods" busily...
Mr. Huynh Van Toan, Director of Chan May Port Joint Stock Corporation, shared that Chan May Port today is familiar on the international maritime map. The port is not only a "shoulder pole" in the chain linking the key economic region of the Central region, but also a "magnet" with great attraction of the Chan May - Lang Co economic zone...
Since its conception in 2003, when it invested in wharf No. 1, Chan May port has created connections and many investment projects in the area, creating jobs for the locality, typically wood chip factories, PV Oil petroleum depots, ADCO asphalt depots... After 10 years of operation, Chan May port has organized the loading and unloading of nearly 10 million tons of goods, welcomed 200,000 international tourists, attracted many large investment projects, and is annually among the top contributors to the province's budget, creating jobs for 50,000 to 70,000 workers in the region.
Currently, Chan May port has three operating wharves, with a total length of about 910m; of which, wharves 1 and 2 are receiving container ships. The annual cargo throughput of the port is about 5 million tons. It is expected that by 2030, the volume of cargo through Chan May port will reach 20-25 million tons/year.
Currently, the Ministry of Transport has decided to allow Chan May port to add three more berths (berths 4, 5 and 6) by 2030. At the same time, it has approved the policy of berths 4 and 5 to add the capacity to handle container cargo with a total length of 540m for ships up to 70,000 tons.
Along with the policy of developing infrastructure at the port, it will contribute to creating leverage for the development of import-export and immigration activities through the area. Specifically, the Chan May Quartz Processing Factory project of America Quazts Technology Co., Ltd. was put into operation at the end of the first quarter of 2023. The Kim Long Motors Hue Production and Assembly Complex project assembles passenger cars (Bus) that meet Euro 5 emission standards or higher, including two main products: 30-45 seat buses and 16-seat passenger shuttle buses put into operation in 2023, contributing to increasing the volume of import and export goods at the port.
Create new breakthroughs
To promote the advantages and potential of this port, the Provincial People's Council passed a Resolution stipulating policies to support shipping lines opening container shipping routes and units and enterprises with containerized goods to/from Chan May port, piloted from October 2022 to the end of 2023.
Accordingly, shipping lines/shipping agents are allowed to operate container transportation business according to regulations and perform cargo delivery or loading at ports according to routes with a minimum frequency of two port calls per month, applying a support level of VND 210 million/port call.
Recently, Chan May port welcomed the first international container ship. This is an important first step in exploiting the container handling function at Chan May port according to the Master Plan of Vietnam's seaport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister.
At the end of 2022, the province organized a conference to promote investment in container shipping lines at Chan May port. This is an opportunity to promote the potential and strengths of Thua Thien Hue economic zones and industrial parks; introduce investment opportunities and projects calling for investment in areas such as industrial parks, seaports, logistics, especially at Chan May port.
On this occasion, businesses in the field of logistics and container goods met, exchanged and learned about the potential and advantages of the "heart" of Chan May - Lang Co economic zone.
Thanks to that, the volume of imported and exported goods through the area has grown significantly, each year higher than the previous year. In the first 3 months of 2023, the port welcomed nearly 160 cargo ships, with 67 ships arriving in March alone, including 11 container ships and 16 international ships exporting and importing goods. Compared to other international ports, it is not equal, but for Chan May port, these are encouraging numbers.
Sharing his views on investment in developing Chan May port, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Phuong said that the province is committed to accompanying and providing maximum support to investors developing in Chan May - Lang Co economic zone; focusing on building Chan May port area to become an attractive destination for domestic and foreign investors. Currently, the province has included port logistics construction projects, logistics transport service projects... in the list of projects calling for investment with an area of about 40 hectares, total estimated capital of 1,500 billion VND.
Provincial leaders affirmed that they will create favorable conditions for Chan May port to develop to a level worthy of an international seaport with modern scale and services, an attractive, friendly and safe destination for shipping lines, tourists and investors.
With the orientation of marine economy, Chan May port will continue to make new breakthroughs because it is in its 20s full of energy, will and aspiration. Chan May port continues to be the "heart" of Chan May - Lang Co economic zone, a dynamic economic zone, contributing significantly to making Thua Thien Hue a centrally-governed city.
According to the Master Plan of Vietnam's seaport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1579/QD-TTg dated September 22, 2021, Chan May port belongs to seaport group No. 2, type I. Chan May wharf area can receive container ships with a capacity of up to 4,000 TEU with the function of serving Chan May - Lang Co economic zone and neighboring areas, combined with the transfer of goods to Laos and the Northeast region of Thailand... |
