There is growing evidence that changes in the Arctic could create more extreme weather conditions in the UK, according to the EAC.
Calling on the government to appoint a “special envoy for the Arctic”, the chairman of the EAC subcommittee on polar research, MP James Gray, said the government was not paying enough attention to the Arctic and that not having an Arctic policy was a “missed opportunity”. He called on ministers to meet regularly because of the major changes taking place in the region.
The report concludes that much of the Arctic is understudied and more information is needed on how changes in the Arctic will impact people's lives.
In the report, the EAC points to research showing the Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the world. The committee calls on the UK government to put the Arctic on the political agenda, commit to a more ambitious emissions reduction commitment and lead global Arctic scientific research efforts.
