According to Strait Times, researchers in Malaysia warn that the emergence of disease X could become a pandemic in the future due to the effects of climate change.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), disease X refers to an unknown pathogen that can appear at any time and cause serious epidemics around the world.
Associate Professor Vinod Balasubramaniam at Monash University (Australia) said that disease X would be another respiratory infection but the patient had no symptoms. Vaccine research is needed before the disease has the risk of an outbreak. The disease may originate from a virus that can mutate in animals and has a high potential to be transmitted to humans.
According to Professor Lam Sai Kit, one of the scientists who discovered the Nipah virus, the disease is likely caused by deforestation and wildlife trafficking. Therefore, authorities should increase surveillance of this disease. Currently, WHO has compiled a list of viruses that are likely to become Pathogen X, which is more likely to cause death than Covid-19.
