Medical news November 17: Warning about patient fraud in hospital areas

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health requested the Oncology Hospital to strengthen communication and consultation solutions to help patients from far away avoid being deceived by bad people.

Warning about patient fraud in hospital areas

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has just received a quick report from Le Van Viet Hospital about a patient who died before being admitted to the hospital, suspected of anaphylactic shock, at No. 17, 225B Street, Tan Phu Ward, Thu Duc City.

Upon receiving the information, the Department of Health deployed a working group to inspect the above address, in coordination with the Thu Duc City Health Department, Ward Health Station, Ward Police and Neighborhood Chief. Through inspection, the team noted that the house at address 17-19 had no signboard and was being used as a boarding house for cancer patients.

At the scene, the patient was found lying on a stretcher, cyanotic, in cardiac arrest, not breathing, dilated pupils, and being monitored by monitor.

There were three incisions on the neck, back and right thigh. A man in medical attire said the patient had been injected with Pegcyte 6mg/0.6ml, after 5 minutes he felt drowsy and should contact the 115 Emergency Center.

The inspection team also discovered that two other patients were receiving an unknown type of intravenous drip in the room, and there were signs of medical equipment being diverted. The Thu Duc City Police Department is currently handling the case and verifying the individuals involved.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health requested the Oncology Hospital to strengthen communication and consultation solutions to help patients from far away avoid being deceived by bad guys.

At the same time, local authorities are requested to increase inspection, detection, and handling of violations of the law around the hospital area.

Previously, also regarding the issue of defrauding people in need of cosmetic surgery, Military Hospital 175 (HCMC) also warned that the hospital was being impersonated to defraud and profit. Many personal pages, private clinics, and cosmetic facilities use keywords related to the hospital such as "175 Cosmetic Institute", "175 Hospital"... to advertise and attract patients.

The hospital representative said that the scams are becoming more and more sophisticated. A series of fake Fanpages have been created, blatantly copying and reposting the hospital's official Fanpage posts, logos, and cover photos. Some fake Facebook pages even take advantage of the reputation of doctors at Military Hospital 175 to cause confusion and profit.

Impersonating, forging, and using the names of doctors and brands of major hospitals to defraud and profit can seriously affect people's health, even the lives of service users; at the same time, it affects the reputation of doctors and hospitals. People need to be extremely alert and cautious to avoid being taken advantage of and deceived by bad guys, leading to "losing money and getting sick".

To prevent impersonation and fraud, hospitals regularly review and report to authorities to strictly handle these subjects.

However, to prevent bad guys from taking advantage, people need to be more vigilant and select accurate information. When in need of medical examination and consultation, people can send a message directly to the hospital's official information portal (with a blue check mark confirmed by Facebook) or call the hospital's hotline for advice and support.

Prednisolone tablets quality violation

The Drug Administration of Vietnam, Ministry of Health, has just sent a document to the Department of Health of provinces and centrally-run cities and Tipharco Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company to announce the recall of level 3 violating drugs.

According to the test results of Binh Duong Provincial Testing Center and Ho Chi Minh City Drug Testing Institute, Prednisolone 5mg tablets, registration number: VD-27065-17, batch number: 020523, manufactured on May 10, 2023, expiry date until May 10, 2026, manufactured by Tipharco Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company, do not meet the standards for solubility.

The Drug Administration has determined this violation to be level 3 and requested Tipharco Company to announce a nationwide product recall within 2 days. Wholesale and retail establishments must conduct the recall and send a report with the recall documents to the Department as prescribed.

Prednisolone 5mg is used as an anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and immunosuppressant, indicated for diseases such as atopic dermatitis, asthma, and hypersensitivity reactions.

Previously, this agency also recalled the drug Cendemuc (Acetylcystein 200mg); GĐKLH number: VD-21773-14; Batch number: 03/0123; NSX: 01/27/2023; EXP: 01/27/2026 manufactured by Central Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company 3, which did not meet quality requirements for fineness.

The drug sample was taken by the Central Institute for Drug Control at Duong Nhung Trading and Service Joint Stock Company (counter 511, 5th floor, Hapu Medicenter, No. 1 Nguyen Huy Tuong, Thanh Xuan, Hanoi).

Successful emergency treatment of a patient who nearly died from strangulated inguinal hernia

On November 15, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases announced that it had successfully treated a patient with a strangulated inguinal hernia.

Patient NVD (79 years old, in Dong Anh, Hanoi) experienced sharp pain and a bulge in the right groin measuring 5x7cm. After taking painkillers without relief, Mr. D. was hospitalized with increasing, unbearable pain. The doctor diagnosed him with a strangulated inguinal hernia and required immediate emergency surgery to avoid intestinal necrosis.

The surgery, which lasted more than an hour, was successful, but part of the intestine had to be removed because of necrosis. Mr. D.'s health is now stable and he is being monitored.

Dr. Bui Thanh Tue, Department of General Surgery, Urology and Andrology, shared that in cases of necrosis, the poisoning is not severe, only surgery is needed to remove the necrotic intestine and monitor the condition after surgery. After about 10 days, if there are no abnormal signs, the patient will be discharged from the hospital.

Inguinal hernia is a common disease in men, especially the elderly. Surgery is a radical treatment method when detected early. If complications occur late, the patient is at risk of having to remove the necrotic organ and experiencing serious infection.

Dr. Tran Thuong Viet emphasized that patients with a history of prostate disease need to have regular health check-ups and should have surgery early when indicated. This helps reduce the risk of dangerous complications such as strangulated inguinal hernia.
