The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) has just sent an official dispatch to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of 12 northern provinces (including Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Son La, Dien Bien, Lang Son, Phu Tho, Hoa Binh, Tuyen Quang, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Binh) requesting the synchronous implementation of measures to prevent locusts from harming bamboo and agricultural crops.

According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, since 2008, bamboo locusts have frequently broken out, causing damage in some mountainous provinces in the North and North Central regions.

The total area of locust damage each year is from 1,000 - 4,000 hectares, mainly on bamboo trees (bamboo, reed, rattan, etc.). When the density is high, they also damage some crops such as upland rice, corn, tobacco, banana, arrowroot, etc.

Bamboo locusts frequently break out and cause damage in some mountainous provinces in the North and North Central regions.

In 2024, bamboo locusts will also cause damage in 9 midland and mountainous provinces in the North (Cao Bang, Bac Kan , Dien Bien, Lang Son, Son La, Dien Bien, Tuyen Quang, Hoa Binh, Phu Tho) and 2 North Central provinces (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An) with a total infected area of about 1,031 hectares.

On May 22, 2025, the People's Committee of Cao Bang province announced the bamboo locust epidemic that damaged forest trees and agricultural crops in Nguyen Binh, Hoa An and Thach An districts to mobilize resources to fight the epidemic.

Since the beginning of 2025, the average temperature in the midland and mountainous areas of the North has been lower than the average of many years (down 0.5 - 1 degree Celsius) accompanied by many days of light rain and prolonged drizzle. Since mid-May, the hot weather has returned, creating favorable conditions for locusts to emerge earlier than in previous years.

In early June, for the first time, people in Bo Trach district (Quang Binh province) recorded high density of bamboo locusts, causing severe local damage.

To proactively prevent and minimize damage caused by bamboo locusts in the coming time, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection requests the Department of Agriculture and Environment of provinces and cities to direct specialized agencies in crop production and plant protection to guide the investigation, early detection and timely spraying of locust nests in the area while the locusts are still young;

Closely monitor the movement and damage caused by adult bamboo locusts to proactively organize effective prevention and control, limiting their movement and damage to many places.

Localities, especially communes where bamboo locusts frequently appear and cause damage, need to proactively develop plans, budgets, and prepare adequate conditions for materials and human resources, and be ready to prevent and control bamboo locusts as soon as they appear.

Direct local specialized agencies and units to maintain information systems, report early to coordinate timely direction, and regularly synthesize and report on the emergence and development of bamboo locusts that damage crops and the direction of prevention and control to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection for timely handling.
