Among the 184 "blue beret" soldiers of the 3rd Engineer Team on this mission, Captain Hoang Huu Cong Thanh (born in 1994) and professional soldier Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Thi Nguyet Ha (born in 1996) are the first married couple to carry out the mission together in a Vietnamese Engineer Team in Africa.
Before their deployment, the couple shared that they were both from Hai Duong and worked at the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department. In September 2023, the two became husband and wife. Captain Thanh had served a term (2022-2023) as a Military Observer at the UNMISS Mission in South Sudan, while Senior Lieutenant Ha participated in this special mission for the first time.
“I joined the army 6 years ago, half the time my husband spent in the army. In Abyei, I will take on the role of administrative-financial officer, while my husband will be the civil-military coordination officer of the 3rd Engineer Team. In addition to the necessary knowledge and skills from pre-deployment training sessions, my husband also "supplemented" me with practical experience because he had participated in a UN peacekeeping mission in the field, especially knowledge of survival in difficult circumstances,” Senior Lieutenant Ha confided.
Captain Thanh said that the couple's plan to go to Abyei together was fully supported and encouraged by both families. Captain Thanh said: "It is a great honor and pride to be able to go on an international mission together on the occasion of our first wedding anniversary. We consider this a valuable experience and an opportunity to contribute our youth to the country and the international community. After completing our mission and returning home, my wife and I will have children to build a happier family."
On the morning of September 24, in Hanoi, the Ministry of National Defense held a ceremony to send off Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 and Engineering Team No. 3 to carry out the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan and the Abyei region. Attending the ceremony, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan presented the President's Decision to send the two units to carry out the mission; presented the national flag and presented the painting "Uncle Ho is marching with us" to the two units.
The Vice President expressed his belief that the units deployed to the mission area will promote their bravery, intelligence and capacity in carrying out the noble tasks assigned by the Party, State, Army and people, meeting the requirements of the United Nations, worthy of the tradition of Uncle Ho's soldiers.
