The surgery lasted 45 minutes. The old man sang the songs he remembered continuously. Despite his advanced age, the songs were sometimes interrupted by memory loss, but the old man and music still "supported" each other through the illness.

Singing while having surgery

In recent days, the online community in Quang Binh has continuously shared a clip of about 2 minutes long about an old man lying and singing on the operating table.

In the clip, the old man was toothless, emaciated, and had a haggard face due to serious illness, lying in the operating room with 2 doctors and several nurses.

Because he was undergoing surgery, the old man was completely covered with medical equipment. Only his face was exposed. Two doctors were performing the surgery using embolization - a new type of procedure in the treatment of diseases related to cancer and blood vessels.

The doctor was working on the blood vessels in his body, but the old man's face still showed optimism. Suddenly, the old man sang lines from the song " The Sea of Memories and You ".

His singing was occasionally interrupted as his voice grew weaker. But after a moment's breath, he continued singing the song until the end.

The old man's voice echoed in the quiet atmosphere of the operating room, surprising and touching many people on social networks.

Optimism and faith in life are things that strangers on social networks can see from him.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Duc Hung, head of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Hospital Dong Hoi confirmed that he was the person who directly performed the surgery in the above clip.

According to Dr. Hung, the surgery was performed on February 26. At that time, patient Tran Xuan Dan, 72 years old, residing in Dong Hai ward, Dong Hoi city, was admitted to the hospital to perform an embolization procedure. This is a new procedure of the hospital to support the treatment of liver cancer patients like Mr. Dan.

With this procedure, the doctor will not interfere much with the patient's body but only insert a microcatheter and microwire through the blood vessels in the patient's wrist into the blood vessels that feed the tumor in the liver, then inject anti-tumor drugs and materials to block the blood vessels that feed the tumor, so the patient will still be conscious as usual.

"However, this is a special case that has never been seen before," said Dr. Hung.

Dr. Hung said that when the surgery began, Mr. Dan asked the doctor if he could sing a song to lift his spirits. He also asked the doctor if anyone could sing with him to make the atmosphere more cozy.

The first time a patient asked to sing during surgery, the doctors were surprised. But realizing that performing an embolization procedure also requires a mental element, the doctors agreed.

And Mr. Dan's voice rose to the song "Sea of Memories and You" while the doctor began the surgery. During the 45 minutes the doctor operated, he sang nearly ten songs continuously.

Ms. Tran Thi Thuan, Mr. Dan’s wife, said that he has had liver cancer for over a year now. Because of his poor health and many underlying diseases, he has to go to the hospital every month for treatment.

She was also surprised when watching the clip of Mr. Dan singing in the operating room.

According to Mrs. Thuan, Mr. Dan normally loves music and poetry. At home, he also sings a lot. When he was sick, he sang even more because he said "singing drowns out the pain."

"Despite his serious illness, he was very optimistic. He said he was lucky to be alive, so he had to cherish every second. And when he sang, he felt he could forget the pain," said Ms. Thuan.
