Audience shed tears when watching MV "Black Eyes"

On the evening of August 10, the band Bức Tường released the MV Mắt đen (Black Eyes) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the song’s release. The product was directed by Hà Kin (a famous blogger at the time) with images recorded in 2011.

The MV features three characters: the late musician and singer Tran Lap, musician Tran Tuan Hung and an actress named Thuy Chi. The image of eyes is repeated many times in the frames, just like the name of the song. Although the scenes are mostly rustic and simple, on social networks, many viewers said they shed tears when they saw leader Tran Lap in the frame, remembering their passionate and enthusiastic youth.

Sharing with PV Dan Viet , musician Tran Tuan Hung (Buc Tuong) said that he was extremely moved when receiving the MV Mat Den from director Ha Kin: "Although I had heard director Ha Kin describe the "picturesque" frames, when I saw the image of Tran Lap singing, my emotions and memories kept flooding back. Everything still felt like it happened yesterday, like the times we practiced this song and performed together on many stages."

Black Eyes is arranged in an acoustic style with a guitar and a singer, so in the MV only two artists appear: Tran Tuan Hung and Tran Lap, instead of the full members of Buc Tuong as usual. Tran Tuan Hung considers this a special and very personal memory of his with the late musician during the time they were together: "Perhaps the best memory is when we sat playing this song together in a hotel in Korea and recorded the clip as everyone knows, it was a really beautiful time. After Lap passed away, I decided not to accompany this song for anyone else" - he confided.

The special "spiritual" story behind the MV "Black Eyes"

Black Eyes was composed by Tran Lap in 1997. The song originally had English lyrics and was called Black Eyes. In the first lines of the English version, the author wrote: "Cause' your black eyes, burn my mind, burn my life. Something right, something wrong, I can see...".

In 2003, Black Eyes was recorded in the album Vo hinh with Vietnamese lyrics. The work quickly spread strongly and was loved by the public across the country, especially the generation of students. Black Eyes was once considered a "confession song" for boys in the 2000s, with sweet, profound lyrics that made every girl's heart flutter: "When I lost my way on the long road/ In your eyes, a warm fire lights the way home/ When I stumble, your eyes are always gentle/ Then burn up the pride to come..."

Talking about whether Black Eyes originated from a love story, musician Tran Tuan Hung said: "This is Lap's own. However, like in many other works, he always sees values from the smallest and most ordinary things. Therefore, it is not surprising that those eyes can be encountered in reality or in unreal places, and he wants it to become a beautiful thing in his music ."

The MV Black Eyes was released more than 10 years after the first footage was recorded. According to musician Tran Tuan Hung, the first meetings between director Ha Kin and leader Tran Lap took place in 2011. At that time, Tran Lap had high hopes that Buc Tuong would have a lifetime MV. However, after a few months, when Tran Tuan Hung asked again, he said he had not found a common voice with the director, that his friend's language was too "new" and he was afraid it would not be suitable.

The MV Black Eyes was closed after Ha Kin returned to the US to study. At the end of 2016, she returned to Vietnam, they discussed continuing this product, the female lead Thuy Chi was invited to come and film some more scenes at a cafe on Ba Trieu street. However, after that, the female director returned to the US and abandoned this project once again.

The project seemed to have been forgotten until Ha Kin cleaned up and rearranged the hard drive. "I saw the folder "Black Eyes Project", opened it and I was drawn into it, there was something urging me to complete this project, right now. Sitting there absorbed in assembling and admiring the finished product, when I had just finished and sent the draft to Mr. Tuan Hung and Ms. Hoa (Mr. Lap's wife), I was surprised to learn that August 10th was the 20th anniversary of the song "Black Eyes" being released. I had absolutely no idea about this, and I thought it was no coincidence that I had managed to complete it like that!"

For Ha Kin, this is a special "spiritual" story, bringing her many emotions. "The lesson from the promise I made to Mr. Lap that I didn't have time to keep always makes me sad every time I think about it. So I always try so that it will never happen again" - the female director shared.
