Mr. Phi's family (Meritorious Artist Hoang Hai, second from the left) overcome difficulties together.
Mr. Phi (Meritorious Artist Hoang Hai) has a happy family with his wife, Mrs. Anh (Meritorious Artist Kieu Anh), and their two children, Duc (Tuan Anh) and Duong (Quynh Trang). However, when the localities merged, Mr. Phi, who was a district-level department head, chose to retire early. Despite this, he didn't want his wife and children to worry and was afraid of the judgment of his relatives back home, so he chose to keep it a secret from everyone.
However, a series of problems arose simultaneously. Previously, Ms. Anh had used her savings and borrowed a large sum of money to help Duc start a business, but it resulted in losses. Meanwhile, the father-son relationship between Mr. Phi and Duc had always been strained. Mr. Phi often imposed his will on his children, forcing them to follow his wishes, while Duc had his own opinions. The conflict reached its peak when Mr. Phi opposed Duc's marriage.
Seeing her husband and children struggling financially and unemployed, Mrs. Anh goes looking for work to pay off debts. However, being used to being protected by her husband and children, she causes more trouble and faces lawsuits. Amidst the family's turmoil, Nhi (Cherry An Nhien) - a girl believed to be Mr. Phi's illegitimate daughter - arrives, further exacerbating the family's crisis and pushing them to the brink of collapse. Will Mr. Phi and his family overcome these challenges?
"A Family of Opposites" explores the story of a family, but the family's problems are set against the backdrop of changing occupational structures, a widening gap in life philosophies between generations, and financial responsibilities falling on middle-aged workers. However, through each event and each problem that is dissected, the family members reflect on themselves, learn to listen, and grow closer. Mr. Phi learns to accept his children's individual journeys, while Duc and Duong learn to empathize and share responsibilities with their father.
"The Family of Opposite Signs" adopts a simple storytelling style, placing characters in everyday situations that nonetheless offer depth. The film takes viewers through the very real clashes of modern family life, where love is sometimes misplaced, sacrifices are sometimes misjudged, and trust is always the most crucial test. The journey of Mr. Phi and each family member conveys many meaningful messages, showing that any distance can be bridged if we face challenges together, move forward, and have faith, love, and tolerance for each other.
The cast's authentic performances have made the film captivating. The contrasting personalities of Mr. Phi and his wife, along with the immersive performances of the two veteran actors, have created engaging emotions for viewers.
