Meritorious Artist Hoang Hai had to work many jobs before returning to acting. He denies being a wealthy man, saying he only has "enough to eat and spend" and can provide for his four children.
Artist Hoang Hai (born in 1968) is known to audiences for his roles as Lieutenant Tran Minh in the long-running series "Criminal Police," Hai in "Life's Path," Luu "the wreck" in "Life Is Still Beautiful," and Deputy Station Chief Quang in the recent "War Without Borders."
In 2012, he was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist by the State.

Speaking to a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper, Meritorious Artist Hoang Hai said that in the late 1990s, when actors' salaries were meager, he left the Hanoi Drama Theatre and moved to Da Nang to start his career.
The male artist confided that those were difficult times when he was trading pigs, but half of them got sick and died. When selling peanuts and beans, he couldn't cross the ferry due to storms, so he had to improvise by renting tarpaulins.
By the time he turned them over, half of the beans had sprouted into bean sprouts. Upon arriving in Hanoi, he sorted through each bag, trying to salvage whatever he could.
One year, the artist went to the Chinese border to buy cotton fabric to sell at Con Market ( Da Nang ), but he imported the wrong color and the goods didn't sell.
After numerous failed business ventures and losing all his gold, Hoang Hai went to work as an ironworker in Buon Ma Thuot, and later found his calling as a long-distance truck driver.
He said that those emotions and ups and downs of life, those times of "being on the edge of the world"—only after experiencing them do you realize how interesting life is, and how it shapes you into a resilient and strong person.
Hoang Hai said that it was director Quoc Trong who brought him back to acting. He recounted that one day, while he was transporting goods, director Quoc Trong came all the way to Da Nang to find him and invite him to participate in the film "Legend of the Mother."
From then on, he continuously received film offers. The actor was swept up in them, unable to break free from acting.
"I guess the profession chose me because back then the economy was tough, and I had to take care of everything for my family. I thought I'd finish the film and go home, but after this film, I got offers from other films, which made it impossible for me to quit. I feel happy that the patron saint of the profession has been kind to me and hasn't let me leave," he confided.
Meritorious Artist Hoang Hai said that artists are always loved by the audience, so wherever he goes, he is recognized and treated kindly. Once, when he flew from Hanoi to Da Nang, at the security checkpoint, the person in charge recognized him and shouted: "Ah, Mr. Luu 'the rascal'!" and asked to take a photo. He said that it was a sincere expression of affection from everyone that he would never forget.

After many ups and downs, the artist now enjoys a fulfilling life with his wife, four children, and grandchildren. His eldest son and daughter are married. The artist chooses to live in Da Nang, and whenever he has a new film project, he packs his bags and travels to Hanoi.
During the most difficult times, his wife was always by his side, providing unwavering support for Meritorious Artist Hoang Hai. Later, when life became more comfortable, the artist returned to the screen, and his wife also sacrificed, stepping back to take care of the house and children so that her husband could focus on his art.
While filming, he constantly travels back and forth between Hanoi and Da Nang, but his wife is used to it and has never had to worry about him. The actor also frequently works with many young and beautiful actresses, but his wife is always at ease and has never once been jealous.
A reporter asked Hoang Hai: "There are rumors that you're a real estate tycoon, spending money without a second thought. Is that true?" The male artist shared: "People just spread rumors, but I only have enough to eat. I have a little extra to provide for my four children's education. I'm a tycoon in terms of emotions; I have many children and grandchildren."
The male artist said that his two older children have gotten married and live separately, and occasionally bring their grandchildren to visit their grandparents. He really enjoys playing with his grandchildren; that's the most relaxing time of his life.
"My house is 3 km from the sea, so the air is lovely. When I'm not making films, I often meet up with friends. I also like children, and playing with my nieces and nephews is even more fun. We want our children to be independent, so we let them live separately so they can 'fend for themselves,' with us parents only providing 'subtle' support," he said.
