The 2025 World Mixed Team Badminton Championships (Sudirman Cup) concluded in early May in China with an impressive victory for the host team. Last year, China also dominated the world of badminton teams by winning the Thomas (men's team) and Uber (women's team) Cups. Witnessing the exciting matches in international badminton team tournaments, many fans wondered about the absence of the Vietnamese badminton team in recent times.

Mr. Khoa Trung Kien, in charge of the badminton department of the Vietnam Sports Administration, said that previously the world team badminton tournament was divided into participating groups based on the criteria of rankings and achievements in the team event, so the Vietnamese badminton team participated in appropriate groups. In recent years, the world team tournaments have changed their format, selecting only the 16 best teams, so the Vietnamese team is not eligible to compete. "Due to the small force and limited budget, the ability to compete is not high, so in recent years, the Vietnamese badminton team has not participated in the Asian team tournament, Asian mixed team tournament. Currently, Vietnamese badminton focuses on investing and sending teams to participate in international tournaments in individual events. When the force is even in all events, there is a chance to compete, the Vietnamese badminton team will consider participating in international team tournaments," Mr. Kien shared.
What to do to improve Vietnamese badminton?
On the world badminton team rankings, the Vietnamese team is currently ranked 49th with 1,531 points, far behind many countries in the Southeast Asian region such as Indonesia (ranked 3rd in the world), Malaysia (ranked 4th), Thailand (ranked 9th), Singapore (ranked 13th). The Vietnamese badminton team has Nguyen Thuy Linh ranked 27th in women's singles, Le Duc Phat ranked 64th in men's singles. However, athletes in the men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles are all outside the world's top 100. Some coaches have expressed their opinion that creating conditions for the Vietnamese badminton team to participate in team tournaments at the continental level or lower to compete and accumulate points is also a way to accumulate points to help the team improve its position on the team rankings.
Badminton is a sport that is receiving major investment from the Department of Sports and Physical Training. At present, the team has 39 players (including 20 young players) practicing at Tu Son University of Sports and Physical Training ( Bac Ninh ). The team also has the support of Indonesian expert Hariawan in developing training plans for both the national team and the youth team. With this strong force, Vietnamese badminton promises to soon find a generation of athletes to succeed their seniors such as Nguyen Tien Minh and Nguyen Thuy Linh. In addition to the individual events of men's and women's singles, Vietnamese badminton also hopes to successfully develop the doubles events including men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles, thereby helping the team to have a balance to compete in the team event.
