Although cashew prices are high, cashew growers in some districts of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province are not benefiting from the decrease in cashew productivity. Some cashew gardens have seen a decrease in cashew nut output of up to 50%.
Although cashew prices are high, cashew growers in Ba Ria-Vung Tau are not benefiting due to a sharp decrease in cashew productivity.
Last year, at this time, Mr. Hoang Sinh, Song Xoai 3 village, Lang Lon commune, Chau Duc district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province was busy harvesting cashews, but this year the cashews are just blooming and preparing to bear fruit.
The reason is due to unfavorable weather, unseasonal rain, and frost causing the flowers to fall and dry. The remaining flowers have a low fruit set rate, expected to yield only about 1 ton of fruit, a decrease of more than 40% compared to previous years.
“The price of cashews at the beginning of the season is high, from 40-45 thousand VND/kg, an increase of 10-20 thousand VND/kg compared to the previous season, but my family still has nothing to sell,” said Mr. Sinh.
Meanwhile, Mr. Le Quang Thai's cashew orchard in Lang Lon commune, Chau Duc district, has seen a decrease in output due to adverse weather conditions. "This year's cashew crop is expected to decrease by about 40%. Hopefully there will be no more unseasonal rains so that the late flowering season will have a high fruit set rate, and farmers can salvage a little bit," said Mr. Thai.
Cashew gardens of farmers in Hoa Hung commune, Xuyen Moc district are also in a situation of serious crop failure due to the impact of harsh weather.
If everything goes well, on average 1 hectare of cashew will yield nearly 3 tons of fruit, but this year's output will decrease by 40-50%.
Mr. Bui Sy Luyen, a cashew farmer in Hoa Hung commune, Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, takes care of his family's cashew garden. Cashew prices are rising in 2025, but cashew output from gardeners is decreasing due to lower cashew productivity.
Not only was the harvest a failure, this year's harvest also came later than usual, causing gardeners to worry that the cashews would lose value and quality because the harvest was during the rainy season.
According to farmers, cashew nut prices are currently high, from 40-50 thousand VND/kg, 10-20 thousand VND higher than last year. However, farmers do not benefit from reduced productivity and late cashew season.
Although cashew is an easy-to-grow, low-maintenance crop, when exposed to unfavorable weather, the plant is susceptible to disease, causing productivity to drop sharply.
The economic value of cashew trees has not been high in recent years, so farmers have gradually cut them down. Mr. Do A Phuong, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hoa Hung Commune, Xuyen Moc District (Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province) shared that due to unstable prices, low profits, and continuous crop failures, farmers in the commune are no longer interested in cashew trees, and the area has decreased by about 20%.
Currently, the cashew area in the province is only about 6,800 hectares, a decrease of nearly 610 hectares compared to the same period in 2024. Faced with this situation, the provincial agricultural and environmental sector has been supporting high-yield cashew varieties to improve productivity and quality of cashew nuts.
At the same time, the industry also recommends that farmers maintain and focus on taking care of cashew growing areas that are giving stable yields, and not invest in new areas of barren, ineffective land.
