Kyung visited Seoul National University on September 5 to give a special lecture on Samsung Semiconductor. He is in charge of Samsung Electronics' chip division. During the lecture, Samsung's co-CEO talked about his most recent visit to the company's chip plant in the US in July 2023 and revealed that the company will start producing 4nm chips there from late 2024.

According to research firm TrendForce, Samsung narrowed the market share gap with TSMC in the second quarter of 2023 thanks to impressive revenue growth. Specifically, the Korean company's market share increased from 9.9% in the first quarter of 2023 to 11.7% in the second quarter of 2023, with sales reaching $3.2 billion, up 17.3% over the same period.

On the other hand, TSMC's market share fell from 60.2% to 56.4%, with sales reaching $15.6 billion, down 6.4%. The decline was due to TSMC scaling back its 5nm and 4nm chip manufacturing process.

Mr. Kyung expressed pride in Samsung being ahead of its “rivals.” TSMC recently announced that it would postpone the opening of its advanced wafer lab in the US despite a strong start. He emphasized that Samsung is playing on its “home field,” while TSMC is playing on its “enemy field.”

He also believes that Samsung Electronics, which is the market leader in memory chips, will succeed in the foundry market and become a trillion-won ($752 billion) company. He said Samsung has continued to develop technologies, adopting 10nm technology in DRAM and increasing the stacking level to 1,000 layers in NAND to maintain its No. 1 position in the field. The company is also working to become a technology leader in chip packaging, which is increasingly important in the semiconductor industry.

“We will produce technologies that do not exist in the world through packaging,” said Samsung co-CEO.

He identified five key technologies that could transform the semiconductor industry: artificial intelligence, IoT, robotics, drones and clean technology. These will be the “new wave of innovation” that will replace the wave of computers and the Internet.
