People in Hoang Ngoc commune (Hoang Hoa district) are harvesting whiteleg shrimp.
Implementing the sustainable aquaculture development plan until 2025, with a vision to 2030, Hoang Hoa district has actively called for and attracted organizations and individuals to invest in the aquaculture sector, gradually forming large-scale concentrated farming areas. Along with this, the locality has focused on investing in the synchronized infrastructure of aquaculture areas such as: road systems, electricity, and water supply and drainage systems to create favorable conditions for people to apply high-tech farming models. In addition, Hoang Hoa district encourages people to convert inefficient agricultural land, especially in low-lying areas and areas within the dikes in communes bordering the east and west of the Cung River, as well as areas outside the dikes of the Lach Truong River, to develop aquaculture. Cooperative societies and individuals in the communes of Hoang Yen, Hoang Luu, Hoang Chau, etc., have proactively invested in converting from extensive black tiger shrimp farming to intensive whiteleg shrimp farming. Initially, they started with outdoor farming in ponds lined with tarpaulin, then gradually switched to greenhouse and covered structures, which helps to better control the farming environment, reduce disease outbreaks, and increase productivity.
To date, Hoang Hoa district has developed 324.8 hectares of concentrated industrial shrimp farming area. Of this, 84.8 hectares apply high technology and 240 hectares are in the high-tech direction. These areas are invested in by cooperatives and individuals who apply many advanced technologies in shrimp farming such as 2-3 stage farming, biofloc technology, UFB, and recirculating water treatment systems, helping to control diseases and minimize environmental pollution. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Giap, a shrimp farmer in Hoang Yen commune (Hoang Hoa), said: “My family currently has 10 concentrated industrial shrimp ponds with a total area of 1 hectare. Thanks to the investment in infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and drainage systems, we can apply modern technologies to production. Each year we can intensively farm up to 3 crops, with an average yield of about 30 tons/ha per crop, generating revenue of more than 1 billion VND/ha/crop.”
Not only in Hoang Hoa district, but also in other coastal localities throughout the province, investment in aquaculture infrastructure is being actively promoted, creating favorable conditions for people and cooperatives to apply scientific and technical advancements in aquaculture. To date, the entire province has established concentrated shrimp farming areas with a total area of 4,200 hectares. Of this, 3,270 hectares are for tiger shrimp and 930 hectares for whiteleg shrimp. These concentrated shrimp farming areas are located in Nga Tan, Nga Thuy, and Nga Tien communes (Nga Son district); Xuan Loc, Da Loc, and Hoa Loc communes (Hau Loc district); Hoang Yen, Hoang Chau, Hoang Phong, Hoang Luu, Hoang Phu, and Hoang Dat communes (Hoang Hoa district); Quang Trung and Quang Chinh communes (Quang Xuong district); Thanh Thuy commune and Hai Chau, Xuan Lam, Truc Lam, and Mai Lam wards (Nghi Son town); and Truong Giang and Tuong Van communes (Nong Cong district). The total output from these shrimp farming areas reaches over 12,000 tons per year, making a significant contribution to the economic growth of the province's agriculture and aquaculture sectors.
Implementing the National Aquaculture Development Program, from 2021 to June 2025, the entire province invested in building 10 concentrated aquaculture zones with a total area of 1,180 hectares in Nga Son, Hau Loc, Hoang Hoa, Quang Xuong districts and Nghi Son town. These farming zones have shifted from extensive and improved extensive farming methods to intensive and super-intensive farming according to VietGAP standards, applying high technology to increase productivity, quality and minimize environmental impact.
Mr. Le Minh Luong, Deputy Head of the Department of Marine and Fisheries of Thanh Hoa province, said: “In order to develop concentrated aquaculture areas, the department is currently actively coordinating with localities in the province to attract investment to continue upgrading and improving infrastructure for concentrated aquaculture areas, ensuring conditions for intensive farming and application of high technology. At the same time, we encourage organizations and individuals to consolidate land for aquaculture investment, apply scientific and technical advancements, and cultivate according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards. In addition, the department proactively coordinates with relevant units to implement measures to strengthen management of aquaculture areas, protect the ecological environment, develop cooperative models and linkages between farmers and businesses to consume products, gradually forming large-scale commodity production areas along the value chain.”
