People in Hoang Ngoc commune (Hoang Hoa) harvest white-leg shrimp.
Implementing the project of sustainable aquaculture development to 2025, with a vision to 2030, Hoang Hoa district has actively called for and attracted organizations and individuals to invest in aquaculture, gradually forming large-scale concentrated aquaculture areas. Along with that, the locality has focused on synchronous investment in infrastructure for aquaculture areas such as: traffic systems, electricity, water supply and drainage systems to create favorable conditions for people to apply high-tech aquaculture models. In addition, Hoang Hoa district encourages people to convert ineffective agricultural land, especially deep-lying areas, inner-dyke areas in communes bordering the East and West of Cung River, as well as the outer-dyke areas of Lach Truong River to develop aquaculture. Cooperatives and people in Hoang Yen, Hoang Luu, Hoang Chau communes... have proactively invested in converting from extensive black tiger shrimp farming to intensive white-leg shrimp farming, initially by raising outdoors in tarpaulin-lined ponds, then gradually switching to greenhouse and roofed houses, helping to better control the farming environment, limit diseases and increase productivity.
Up to now, the whole Hoang Hoa district has developed 324.8 hectares of concentrated industrial shrimp farming area. Of which, 84.8 hectares apply high technology and 240 hectares follow high technology. These areas have been invested by cooperatives and people to apply many advanced technologies in shrimp farming such as 2-3 stage farming, biofloc technology, UFB, circulating water treatment system, helping to control diseases and minimize environmental pollution. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Giap, a shrimp farmer in Hoang Yen commune (Hoang Hoa), said: "My family currently has 10 concentrated industrial shrimp farming ponds with a total area of 1 hectare. Thanks to the farming area being invested in infrastructure such as roads, electricity, drainage systems, we can apply modern technologies to production. Each year, we can intensively farm up to 3 crops, each crop achieving an average yield of about 30 tons/ha, bringing in revenue of more than 1 billion VND/ha/crop".
Not only Hoang Hoa, coastal localities in the province are also actively promoting investment in infrastructure for farming areas, creating conditions for people and cooperatives to apply scientific and technical advances in aquaculture. Up to now, the whole province has formed concentrated shrimp farming areas with an area of 4,200 hectares. Of which, black tiger shrimp is 3,270 hectares, white-leg shrimp is 930 hectares. Shrimp farming areas are concentrated in the communes of Nga Tan, Nga Thuy, Nga Tien (Nga Son); Xuan Loc, Da Loc, Hoa Loc communes (Hau Loc); Hoang Yen, Hoang Chau, Hoang Phong, Hoang Luu, Hoang Phu, Hoang Dat communes (Hoang Hoa); Quang Trung, Quang Chinh communes (Quang Xuong); Thanh Thuy commune and Hai Chau, Xuan Lam, Truc Lam, Mai Lam wards (Nghi Son town); Truong Giang, Tuong Van communes (Nong Cong). The total output from these shrimp farming areas reaches more than 12,000 tons/year, contributing significantly to the economic growth of the province's agriculture and aquaculture sectors.
Implementing the National Program for Aquaculture Development, from 2021 to June 2025, the province has invested in building 10 concentrated aquaculture areas with a total area of 1,180 hectares in Nga Son, Hau Loc, Hoang Hoa, Quang Xuong districts and Nghi Son town. These farming areas have converted from extensive and improved extensive farming methods to intensive and super-intensive farming according to VietGAP processes, applying high technology to increase productivity, quality and minimize environmental impacts.
Mr. Le Minh Luong, Deputy Head of the Department of Sea, Islands and Fisheries of Thanh Hoa province, said: “In order to develop concentrated aquaculture areas, the department is currently actively coordinating with localities in the province to focus on attracting investment to continue upgrading and perfecting infrastructure for concentrated aquaculture areas, ensuring conditions for intensive farming and high-tech application. At the same time, organizations and individuals are encouraged to accumulate land to invest in aquaculture, apply scientific and technical advances, and cultivate according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP processes. In addition, the department proactively coordinates with relevant units to implement measures to promote management of aquaculture areas, protect the ecological environment, develop cooperation models, and link between farmers and businesses to consume products, gradually forming large commodity production areas according to the value chain”.
