On the evening of October 21st, OpenAI officially announced the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser integrating outstanding AI tools such as page content summarization, form filling, and automated code writing to engage users.
According to Reuters , this is OpenAI's latest move to leverage its 800 million weekly active ChatGPT users by expanding into more aspects of users' online lives through data collection on browsing behavior.
Specifically, in the demo, Atlas allows users to open ChatGPT in any window to summarize content, compare products, or analyze data from any website.
Atlas's highlight lies in its agent mode. In this mode, ChatGPT can interact with websites, completing tasks from start to finish on behalf of the user, such as research or shopping for a trip.
To illustrate, OpenAI demonstrated how ChatGPT could find a recipe online and then automatically purchase all the ingredients. The AI then navigated to the Instacart website and added the necessary groceries to the shopping cart. The entire process was completed by the AI in just a few minutes.
ChatGPT Atlas has now been released globally on Apple's macOS operating system. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android are expected to be released soon.
Despite increasing competition, Google Chrome maintains its dominance, holding a 71.9% market share in the global browser market in September, according to StatCounter . However, analysts suggest that new AI browsers from OpenAI could pose a fresh challenge to Google's advertising revenue.
“Integrating chatbots into the browser is a prerequisite for OpenAI to start selling ads, something they haven’t done until now. Once OpenAI starts selling ads, they could take a significant share of the search advertising market from Google, which currently holds about 90% of the market in this segment,” said Gil Luria, an analyst at DA Davidson.
