Speaking ahead of the Bahrain Asian Youth Games, which will take place from October 22 to 31, Dr Low Chee Yong revealed that the Asian Youth Games will also be an opportunity for Singapore’s young athletes to review their own abilities after competing with the best young athletes in the region.
Dr. Low Chee Yong - Head of the Singapore Sports Delegation at AYG3
Attending the 3rd Asian Youth Games, Singapore sent 54 athletes to compete in 11 sports including: athletics, badminton, equestrian, golf, jiu-jitsu, pencak silat, taekwondo, swimming, table tennis, triathlon and wrestling.
“In our sports delegation, there are several promising athletes who have performed well at recent regional and youth competitions. We look forward to seeing them step up to the bigger stage, especially in sports such as swimming, athletics, badminton and table tennis, where Singapore is known for its young talent,” Dr Low Chee Yong added.
According to Dr Low Chee Yong, the Asian Youth Games is a great platform for young athletes to compete at a high level. The Games help young talents get early exposure to the experience of a major multi-sport Games to understand what it means to represent Singapore sports as well as create momentum to enter bigger playgrounds such as the Youth Olympic Games.
Singapore also hopes that each athlete will put in their best effort and aim for personal breakthroughs at this Games. This is also an opportunity for the country’s sports to find solutions to support young talents to develop to new heights.
Promising young athletes from Singapore have been supported by the High Performance Academy through a range of support systems to help athletes achieve their sporting aspirations, including initiatives such as the Spex Scholarship.
Swimmer Joseph Schooling, who brought home Singapore's first Olympic gold medal, was a recipient of the Spex Scholarship and continues to inspire not only generations of Singaporean athletes but also the people to pursue excellence.
Six athletes expected to win medals for Singapore in Bahrain as well as Thailand in December at the 2025 SEA Games include: Shannon Tan (athletics), Chiara Mei Corbi (equestrian), Julia Yeo and Ted Windsor Chan (swimming), Jemma Hadden (triathlon) and Loy Ming Ying (table tennis).
