How should parents guide their children?

VTC NewsVTC News02/07/2023

On the evening of June 30, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced the 10th grade entrance exam scores of nearly 105,000 students.

It is known that the enrollment quota for public high schools is about 72,000, accounting for 55.7%, along with the quota for some specialized schools. This means that more than 30,000 students will not have the opportunity to study at public schools.

In case they do not have enough points to enter public grade 10, junior high school graduates will have the option to study at vocational education - continuing education centers; colleges and intermediate schools that teach continuing education at high school level combined with vocational training; and non-public schools.

According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, about 30,000 students are enrolled in autonomous public and private high schools, accounting for 23.2%. About 10,000 students are enrolled in vocational education and continuing education centers, accounting for 7.7%.

Enrollment in vocational education institutions (vocational education centers - continuing education centers associated with secondary schools and colleges teaching high school continuing education programs) is about 17,210 students, accounting for 13.4%.

Faced with many of the above problems, experts say that parents need to be a support, a bridge to provide direction to help their children choose the right path.

According to Ms. Hoang Thi Thu Nhien, a psychologist at Thu Nhien Better Minds Community Support Center, when they know the results, many parents are very satisfied and happy if their children's scores meet their expectations. On the contrary, many parents appear to collapse when they know their children's scores. Only a small number of parents have a calm attitude.

Ms. Nhien analyzed that children achieving the expected results makes parents happy and want everyone to know. This pride becomes excessive when showing off children's achievements is accompanied by aggressive or arrogant words, with the intention of provoking parents whose children have not achieved the expected results... just to satisfy their own excessive satisfaction.

On the other hand, parents' excessiveness causes children to have mixed reactions. Some children will learn from their parents' excessiveness to become conceited; others will feel ashamed because their parents show off too much, causing them to have a "shameful" mentality... All of these are not good for children.

"Other parents are negative, ashamed, and disappointed with their children's results. They have to hide the results, and are annoyed when they see other parents showing off their children's achievements. And finally, they are annoyed with their children, saying things like criticizing "other people's children" ... making their children victims of the exam, unintentionally activating in their children a feeling of shame (self-pity, shame), pushing them to blame themselves and lose confidence in themselves. This has a serious impact on their children's mood.

Parents should be alert in their reactions. Parents are a place for their children to share, a place for them to seek mental safety, a source for them to be proud of their strengths and not be tormented by feelings of guilt because they have not done their best as expected.

"Please support your child if he/she does not achieve the desired results. Our child has tried very hard. His/her future does not depend 100% on the results of the 10th grade entrance exam, so he/she really needs the companionship and sharing of his/her parents from now on," said Ms. Nhien.

Look on the bright side, everything will be positive.

Sharing the same view, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thanh Nam, Head of the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Education (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) said that with the target set by Hanoi, it is completely normal for many students to fail to get into public schools. Parents - those who are close to their children - should be calm and understand their children better, instead of expressing negative emotions in front of them. "Because they are the saddest people in this story," Associate Professor Nam said.

According to Associate Professor Nam, parents expressing negative emotions when the results and everything are "fait accompli" will not solve the problem as desired. Instead, parents should find other, more optimal solutions. For example, directing their children to private schools that suit the wishes and economic conditions of the family, or enrolling in a continuing education school is also an option.

"Currently, the curriculum in public and private schools is the same. On the other hand, in private schools, children can participate in more practical activities, which helps them gain more experience and knowledge," Associate Professor Nam said.
