School helps school
Tam Quang Kindergarten (Tam Quang, Nghe An ) was continuously affected by 3 storms in the past 2 months. The most serious damage was after storm Kajiki, the main school and many other locations had their corrugated iron roofs blown off by the wind, floodwaters rose high and flooded deep into classrooms, damaging teaching equipment, utensils, and children's toys. 9 teachers of the school also had their houses eroded, flooded, and their belongings swept away.
Ms. Le Hong Quang - Principal of the school shared: "In a mountainous border commune, people's lives are inherently difficult and arduous, so calling for social mobilization from parents is difficult to implement. Besides, after the storm and flood, people are left empty-handed and struggling."
At that time, the school was fortunate to receive support from the "school helping school" movement. Many kindergartens in the lowlands that were not flooded called for support, directly to Tam Quang Kindergarten, providing both human and material support. Colleagues from far away were willing to stay for several days to clean up the mud in both the school and the teachers' houses that were damaged. In addition, they supported the school with 15 million in cash to supplement some supplies and toys for the children.
“With the help of colleagues, the Nghe An Provincial Department of Education , the school and I personally proactively called for sponsorship in many forms. Through that, the school received significant support, mainly in kind such as water pumps, water filters, desks, chairs, student cabinets... and many utensils to support cooking for boarding children. The total value of the items the school received was about 900 million VND,” said Ms. Le Hong Quang.
However, after overcoming the consequences and teaching stably for less than a month, the recent storm No. 10 with its strong winds continued to blow off the roof of Tam Quang Kindergarten. The school's principal choked up and said: "We are exhausted, but we still have to try to overcome each step." After the storm, the school used the fund to repair the roof to ensure the safety of the children. At the same time, it called on kind-hearted people to care and share with teachers and students in the highlands.
“It is a great pleasure that recently, the volunteer group gave the children of the school a lion dance, star lanterns, candy, fresh milk, clothes and portable speakers. This is a very meaningful gift for the school to organize a warm Mid-Autumn Festival for the children after the devastating storms and floods,” Ms. Le Hong Quang shared.
Storm Bualoi swept through, all schools in Thien Nhan commune (Nghe An) were damaged, including 2 flooded schools: Trung Phuc Cuong 3 Kindergarten and Trung Phuc Cuong 2 Primary School. In addition, Khanh Son 2 Kindergarten had 2 classrooms' roofs blown off, the entire multi-purpose building collapsed, Khanh Son 2 Primary School had 12 classrooms' roof blown off, the entire teacher's garage collapsed...
Ms. Le Thi Lan - Principal of Trung Phuc Cuong 2 Primary School said: The school is located in a low-lying area, downstream of Lam River, so flooding often occurs during the rainy and stormy season. This year in particular, this is the second time the school has been flooded, affecting teaching and learning. However, the classrooms and functional rooms are located high up, so they are not flooded inside. Currently, the school has urgently repaired and cleaned the school yard to welcome students back to normal study.
Due to the school's location in a flood-prone area, in recent years, the school has always focused on consulting, proposing construction and supplementing facilities in a concentrated and solidified direction. In the 2025-2026 school year, a multi-purpose building with a total value of more than 6 billion VND will be put into use, creating a unified complex from an outdoor library, artificial football field... helping students have the opportunity to participate in cultural, artistic and sports activities.
These projects were built from educational funding from benefactors. The locality has also invested in solidifying the physical facilities of the main branch, including classrooms, functions, departments, and a friendly library to ensure comprehensive educational needs and to move towards merging branch 2 into the main branch.

Proactively connect resources
Dinh Ban Primary School (Thach Khe, Ha Tinh), in less than a month, was continuously affected by two major storms: Kajiki and Bualoi. The first storm caused the entire roof of the classrooms to be blown away, while the repairs were still unfinished, storm No. 10 continued to hit, destroying the remaining roof, completely blowing off the roofs of many functional areas.
Sharing about the difficulties after the storm, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet - Principal of the school said: "Never before have we witnessed such great damage due to natural disasters. But we determined that we could not wait, we had to proactively find ways to help students return to school soon."
Immediately after the storm, the school's Board of Directors, staff and teachers urgently cleaned up and took advantage of all communication channels such as Zalo, Facebook, community groups, parents of former students, personal friends... to call for support.
Thanks to this initiative, the school received timely support from many sources such as: A local bank supported 10 million VND for 10 students in difficult circumstances; The school principal also connected with business friends to support 50 sets of uniforms for students on the occasion of Mid-Autumn Festival; Thach Khe Commune People's Committee also supported additional machinery for outdoor activities, some necessary equipment, helping the school have more conditions to recover faster.
At Son Loc Secondary School (Xuan Loc commune), storm No. 10 severely damaged many important items: the roof of the principal's house was blown off, the library system was flooded and all books and teaching equipment were damaged.
Without waiting for the budget, the school immediately planned to mobilize support, through relationships with alumni, local businesses and community donors. Thanks to the consensus of the collective, the school has called for more than 100 million VND, of which a part is used for repairs, the rest is used to buy books and learning equipment.

Think long term
According to quick statistics from the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An, storm Bualoi has affected about 500 schools such as: flooding, landslides, blown off corrugated iron and tile roofs of classrooms and functional rooms... The initial damage estimate for the education sector is nearly 300 billion VND. The Department of Education and Training of Nghe An has provided partial funding to encourage schools to overcome difficulties and soon stabilize teaching and learning.
In the coming time, the Department also hopes that localities and schools will take advantage of funding sources, support sources, and call for socialization to gradually overcome the damage. Previously, after storm Kajiki, the Nghe An Education sector called for and mobilized more than 2 billion VND to support schools that suffered damage, to promptly supplement equipment and repair facilities to stabilize teaching and learning.
According to preliminary statistics from the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh as of September 30, the entire province had 418 educational establishments affected by storm No. 10, with total estimated damage of about 457.7 billion VND. Many schools had their roofs blown off, classrooms and teachers' houses collapsed, and gates, trees, libraries, garages, and canopies were severely damaged.
Thousands of textbooks, teaching equipment, and student desks and chairs were damaged by flooding. However, thanks to the proactive spirit and support from many sides, by October 3, 657 educational institutions across the province had returned to normal teaching.
In addition to the efforts of each school, the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh has taken drastic action, closely directing the work of preventing and overcoming the consequences of the storm, especially focusing on mobilizing support from organizations, businesses and central units.
“Immediately after the storm, the department issued a series of directives, established inspection teams in localities, promptly recorded the damage and encouraged schools. The Vietnam Education Trade Union supported 200 million VND, prioritizing heavily affected schools,” informed Mr. Nguyen Hong Cuong - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh.
Previously, in early September, Viettel Group - Ha Tinh Branch supported 100 million VND for 5 schools that suffered serious damage including: Mai Thuc Loan High School, Nguyen Du High School, Nghi Xuan High School, Cam Binh High School and Son Loc Middle School - each unit received 20 million VND. These are schools with damage of over 300 million VND/school.
After a year of temporarily moving back to the old school, in mid-September 2025, the Friends Club and Chu Van An Primary Boarding School (Tra Tap, Da Nang City) held a groundbreaking ceremony to build a new Rang Chuoi school.
Previously, heavy rains at the end of September 2024 caused the Rang Chuoi school to have mud from the hill behind it flood into the classrooms. The classrooms and teachers' housing at this school had only been handed over and put into use by the sponsor less than a month ago.
Mr. Truong Cong Mot - Principal of the school said, to have enough space to build Rang Chuoi school, a part of the hill behind the school had to be leveled, because there were no trees growing to cover the bare land, leading to landslides. 2 classrooms at Rang Chuoi school were moved back to the old school a short distance away to organize teaching and learning.
“The sponsor still wants to keep the newly built classrooms and has discussed many times with the People's Committee of Nam Tra My district (old) about the safety plan for the new school. However, if we build an embankment behind to ensure the safety of the project, the cost will be up to 2 billion VND, not to mention having to repair the minor damage caused by the landslide in September 2024,” Mr. Mot informed.
Chu Van An Primary Boarding School has connected with the Friends Club to start rebuilding the classrooms for Rang Chuoi school on the old school's land. Some households around the school area have donated part of their garden land to expand the playground for students. According to Mr. Mot, after surveying, choosing to build at the old school's location is the safest option because it does not require leveling the hill, avoiding erosion due to heavy rain.
Mr. Hoang The Anh - Principal of Son Loc Secondary School (Xuan Loc Commune, Ha Tinh) shared: "Although the situation is still chaotic after the storm, every timely support from the community has given us more strength. However, we also hope to have more support so that the school can soon stabilize its facilities, serving teaching and learning well."
