These days, the house of Mr. Tran Xuan Thiem (43 years old) and Mrs. Bui Thi Luu (42 years old) is bustling with neighbors coming to congratulate their son on his valedictorian exam.

To raise four children for many years, Mr. Thiem, in addition to farming more than one hectare of land, had to work as a construction worker and a bricklayer. Mrs. Luu was illiterate and had poor health...

Poor parents are illiterate, but their child is the valedictorian.

Small in stature, with a face that looks older than his age due to a hard life, Mr. Thiem said that since he heard the news that his son got 39 points in four subjects (10 points in math and physics, 9.75 in chemistry, 9.25 in literature), he was very happy and joyful and all the fatigue, hardship, and worries seemed to disappear.

To have money to pay for his four sons' education, he and his wife, in addition to farming more than one hectare, also worked as construction workers.

"Apart from Dam, my family has just oriented the older child to join the police force, and the two younger children will enter first grade this year.

"A few years ago, my wife had an accident and had to have nails put in her feet, and I fell from the second floor and still haven't had the nails removed. My wife and I are in poor health, but to make money to make ends meet, we have to work as construction workers," Mr. Thiem confided with red eyes.

According to Mr. Thiem, because his family was so poor, he had to drop out even though he passed the entrance exam to Nam Dinh Pedagogical College. As for Mrs. Luu, she was illiterate because she had never been to school.

"My wife and I were extremely happy to see our child get high scores. My wife did not go to school and only knows how to do simple mental calculations. She is illiterate, so every time she goes to the hospital for a check-up or has a job at home that requires a signature, she has to fingerprint," said Mr. Thiem.

Talking about his expectations for his son, Mr. Thiem confided: "Any profession is fine as long as he feels it is suitable for him. Whatever he is passionate about, he will study it. I hope he will escape the hardships like my wife and I so that he can help his family and contribute to society in the future."

New day starts at 4:30 am

Sharing about the study method to achieve excellent and impressive results like the recent high school graduation exam results, Dam said that almost in class, he focused on studying carefully to understand the nature of the problems that the teachers conveyed.

Whatever the teachers instruct, Dam will remember deeply when encountering any situation, and how to ask any question, he can think of and complete it as quickly as possible.

Usually every day Dam wakes up at 4:30 - 5:00 am and then sits at his desk to study.

Achievement board

In the provincial excellent student competition in grade 12, Tran Xuan Dam won second prize in chemistry, and in grade 11 he won third prize in information technology. In grade 10 and grade 11 he won first prize and second prize in the provincial math and science competitions in English.

Dam also participated in the 4th National High School Students' National Defense and Security Education Competition and won third prize in the general knowledge competition.

I was twice recognized for having excellent STEM products at the provincial science and technology and STEM festival.

"After school, I will eat breakfast and go to school. When I get home from school, I will help my parents with housework. Usually, I will study until 11pm at night and then go to bed. There are days when I have too much homework and have to stay up a little later to complete the set goals.

But there are days when I'm too tired, I'll go to bed early so as not to affect my long-term studies," Dam shared.

Dam said that he likes to study natural subjects the most, especially chemistry, and what surprised him was the result of literature.

"I love literature. Every class is quite enjoyable and helps me improve many skills such as writing and presentation. But the literature test is an essay so I can't give a score. I'm very happy to get 9.25," Dam said.

Over the past few days, Dam has received many congratulations and encouragement from teachers and friends at My Loc High School.

"The school, friends and relatives not only encouraged me but also gave me hope for the future, so I will try harder. In the near future, I plan to choose to study control and automation engineering at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. I hope to become an automation engineer in the future," Dam said.

Speaking with Tuoi Tre , Ms. Tran Thi Mai - principal of My Loc High School - said Dam is an excellent student, studying all subjects well and actively participating in extracurricular activities.

With his tireless efforts, the school was honored to have Dam achieve the title of national valedictorian.

"Regarding teaching methods, the school has many experienced teachers such as Ms. Tran Thi Hong Don who teaches chemistry and always seeks in-depth knowledge for students. Mr. Vu Dinh Giap teaches physics very strictly but is loved by students because of his effective teaching methods.

Ms. Ta Thi Hang, who teaches math, has a meticulous way of imparting knowledge and cares about each student, and Ms. Ha Nguyet Dung, who teaches literature, also has many creative and effective teaching methods," said Ms. Mai.

According to Ms. Mai, the teachers in the school always innovate teaching methods and new learning methods, so in addition to Dam's excellent achievements, in the recent high school graduation exam, the whole school had 25 students who scored 10 points in all subjects and 198 students who scored 9 points or higher.

In addition to Tran Xuan Dam with impressive achievements, this year Ninh Binh province has Nguyen Thai An (student of Kim Son A High School) as one of nine valedictorians nationwide with perfect scores of 10 in all three subjects of block A00 (math - physics - chemistry).
