Hit rock bottom, Thai women's volleyball team afraid of losing to Vietnam

Ahead of the decisive match at SEA V.League 2025 taking place on the afternoon of August 3, Thai women's volleyball fans cannot help but worry about the risk of defeat against Vietnam.

Thailand's women's volleyball team has kept a perfect record against Vietnam for many years.

At the SEA Games, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team has lost to Thailand in 11 finals, from 2001 to the present. In other arenas, Thailand has always been dominant, even though the Vietnamese volleyball girls have made remarkable progress in recent years.

In the Asian Championship and Asiad taking place in 2023, Vietnam suffered a decisive defeat against Thailand. In the first round of the SEA V.League last year, the Vietnamese girls came very close to a historic victory, but still lost 2-3 in the end.

However, the confidence of Thai fans is gradually wavering when entering SEA V.League 2025. The reason is because of the home team's declining performance recently.

At VNL 2025, Thailand only won 1 match - their worst performance ever in this arena. Thailand even nearly got relegated, only surpassing Korea in the final round - when they stubbornly won 2 matches against Canada.

With that form, Coach Kiattipong could not hide his anxiety when entering the SEA V.League. In an interview before the tournament, this legendary strategist said:

"We have done a lot of research on the teams before the tournament. We know their level well - especially Vietnam. They are playing very well and their ranking is increasing.

I have to consider a lot about the squad for this tournament. There are players who are injured and have to miss out, some have minor injuries that need to be considered. We need to adjust many things to achieve our goal - to maintain the No. 1 position in Southeast Asia."

This statement by coach Kiattipong is both modest and a warning to his students about the progress of Vietnamese women's volleyball.

Not only coach Kiattipong, many Thai fans are also worried about the fate of their team, especially after witnessing the unconvincing performance of the Thai women's volleyball team at SEA V.League 2025.

In both matches against the Philippines and Indonesia - both teams with far inferior strength - Thailand lost one game. Despite having many key players, the performance of the Thai women's volleyball team so far has been clearly unconvincing.

"When was the last time we lost to Vietnam? It seems like never. But I'm afraid this loss will come at this time," a fan with the nickname Risen commented on YouTube.

Another fan said: "Vietnam is clearly getting stronger. Their level is probably not much worse than Thailand's. If we are subjective, we might lose."

Meanwhile, the Nation newspaper commented: "There is still a small gap in level between Thailand and Vietnam, but Vietnam will certainly create a big challenge."
