President Ho Chi Minh affirmed a great truth of human social life, a truth of the times: “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” at an extremely important and turning point moment of the Vietnamese revolution. This thought of his has both great theoretical and practical value, profound humanistic value, and is the goal and driving force for the development of a prosperous and happy country.

The idea of “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” was formed when President Ho Chi Minh left to find a way to save the country and is the product of a scientific thinking process, originating from the practical struggle for independence and freedom of our people. “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” is the great idea of President Ho Chi Minh, a valuable contribution of his to the treasure of revolutionary theories of the era, a great contribution to the national liberation movement around the world in the 20th century. “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” is the goal, the driving force, the guiding principle for the victory of the people’s national democratic revolution and the socialist revolution in our country, the sacred call, urging our people to sacrifice blood and bones to gain and maintain independence, to build a good life for themselves. “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” is the idea of peace , happiness, prosperity, progress and social justice, shining with the noble humanistic thought of beloved President Ho Chi Minh.
“Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” - President Ho Chi Minh's thoughts on peace
During the process of leading our people in the resistance war against invaders, President Ho Chi Minh affirmed many times that the Vietnamese nation and people love peace and do not want war, but because the colonialists and imperialists invaded Vietnam and enslaved the Vietnamese people, the Vietnamese people were forced to take up arms and fight to gain freedom and independence.
There are two important and dramatic moments of our country's revolution that demonstrate President Ho Chi Minh's above viewpoint, the first moment at the end of 1946, the second moment in 1965.
On September 2, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh, on behalf of his compatriots, declared to the world : “Vietnam has the right to enjoy freedom and independence and has truly become a free and independent country.” But then, with their imperialist nature, the French colonialists sought every way to destroy the young Democratic Republic of Vietnam and invaded our country once again. President Ho Chi Minh, together with our Party, State and People, sought every way to reconcile to push back the war and maintain the independence and freedom that our People had just won from the Japanese. But the more we reconciled, the more the French colonialists encroached. When it was impossible to maintain national independence by reconciliation or peaceful negotiations, President Ho Chi Minh called on our People to wage a long-term resistance war to gain and maintain independence and freedom. “My compatriots and I sincerely want peace. We do not want war... We want to avoid this war by all means. We are passionate about independence... Vietnam needs to be rebuilt, Vietnam does not want to be the place where so many lives are buried. But if people force us to do that war, we will do it. We are not surprised by what awaits us... Vietnam is ready to endure everything, but will not lose its freedom”[1]. “... We want peace, we must make concessions. But the more we make concessions, the more the French colonialists will encroach, because they are determined to take over our country once again. No! We would rather sacrifice everything, but will not lose our country, absolutely will not be slaves...”.
When the neo-colonial policy failed, the US was forced to directly intervene in the South and then expand the destructive war to the North. In the face of the aggressive actions of the US imperialists and the distorted and threatening arguments of the US government, President Ho Chi Minh publicly declared to the world: “The Vietnamese people love peace very much, but peace cannot be separated from national independence. The Vietnamese people know that to have true peace, there must be true independence; and fighting for national independence means fighting to protect peace. The Vietnamese people will never tolerate the US invaders destroying peace, trampling on our independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity”[2]. “The war may last 5 years, 10 years, 20 years or even longer. Hanoi, Hai Phong and some other cities and factories may be destroyed, but the Vietnamese people will not be afraid! Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom. When the day of victory comes, our people will rebuild our country to be more dignified and beautiful!”
The truth, “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” is drawn from the profound awareness of the invasive, belligerent, and stubborn nature of imperialism, directly the French and American imperialists. “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” is generalized from the practice of the Vietnamese people’s steadfast and indomitable struggle against foreign invaders in the 20th century. Because they want true peace, the Vietnamese people must fight against invaders to gain independence for the nation and freedom for themselves; the Vietnamese people’s long-term resistance to gain freedom and independence is also to want true peace. Peace in independence and freedom, independence and freedom is the content of peace; without independence and freedom, peace is only a false peace, that is the content of Ho Chi Minh’s ideology expressed in his famous saying “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom”.
Not only fighting for true peace for the Vietnamese people, President Ho Chi Minh was also a staunch soldier of the national liberation movement, the international communist and workers' movement. He repeatedly affirmed: "Freedom and independence are the natural rights of every nation..."[3]. The idea of "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom" has gone beyond the territory of Vietnam, becoming the goal and motto of action of the people of invaded and enslaved countries. Wherever there is oppression, exploitation and injustice, the idea of "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom" shines and that idea has become the slogan for the struggle for peace of progressive peoples all over the world. Thus, "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom" is also the idea of freedom and equality among nations, the idea of independence and sovereignty of nations all over the world.
“Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” - President Ho Chi Minh's thoughts on happiness, prosperity, progress and social justice
Independence and freedom go hand in hand with prosperity, happiness, progress and social justice, which is the main ideology in Ho Chi Minh's ideology. Because President Ho Chi Minh himself has repeatedly affirmed: "I have only one desire, the utmost desire, which is to make our country completely independent, our people completely free, everyone has food to eat, clothes to wear, everyone can study...", "Today, we have built a Democratic Republic of Vietnam. But if the country is independent but the people do not enjoy happiness and freedom, then independence is meaningless...", ... "What is socialism? It is that everyone has enough to eat, is warm, is happy, and is free. But if you want to separate yourself and sit there eating, is warm, and does not care about others, that is not good. If you want to eat, is warm, and is well-fed, you also need to make sure everyone has enough to eat, is warm, and is well-dressed, that is the right thing to do. To do that, you must work hard, work hard to produce"[4].
Independence and freedom are closely linked to socialism, that is the revolutionary thought of President Ho Chi Minh, because according to him, only socialism can ensure independence for nations and freedom for the People; only socialism can ensure true independence and freedom; and socialism can only be successfully built if independence and freedom are ensured, meaning that without maintaining independence, socialism cannot be successfully built. Putting independence and freedom closely linked to socialism and independence and freedom is a prerequisite for successfully building socialism, fully understanding and demonstrating a profound understanding of the meaning of President Ho Chi Minh's thought "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom".
Independence, freedom and socialism, in terms of the historical process of our country's revolution, are a continuous process, gaining independence, freedom and moving towards socialism. But that is a dialectical combination. Right in the process of fighting for independence, we had to carry out activities to build the elements of socialism, so that after independence, we could move straight to socialism. At the same time, in the process of building socialism, we did not slacken for a minute in our task of protecting independence and freedom. Socialism has been a driving force for our people to fight for national independence, because after national independence, we will build a prosperous and happy life for all working people. At the same time, independence and freedom are a driving force for us to successfully build socialism, because only under socialism can national independence be sustainable, and the people can be free, prosperous and happy.
“Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” has been a driving force for our people to overcome all hardships and sacrifices, defeat the great empires, gain national independence, and unify the country. Today, “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” is still, and must be, a driving force for us to build socialism, realize the goal of “rich people, strong country, democracy, equality, civilization”, so that by 2030 we will be a developed country with modern industry and high average income; by 2045 we will become a developed country with high income. Therefore, if we do not nurture, foster, and promote the consciousness of independence and freedom in every Vietnamese person today, we will not be able to mobilize all resources, not be able to create a great spiritual strength to overcome poverty and backwardness, to build our country “more dignified, more beautiful”, on par with the world powers as Uncle Ho always wished.
President Ho Chi Minh's ideology "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom" has been, is and will forever guide our people on the path to building a prosperous, free, prosperous, happy, progressive, democratic and socially just life today./.
