Young doctor Le Tien Huy (27 years old), currently working at   Institute of Medical Science and Technology (Hanoi) has a Facebook page that attracts more than 110,000 followers because it regularly shares medical knowledge that is close to life.

Want to become a doctor after a serious illness

As a student at Chu Van An High School ( Yen Bai province), Dr. Huy always had academic achievements in the top 3 of his grade. This young man has a strong passion for physics and chemistry, but not for dry exercises but always seeks to apply knowledge into practice.

“Thanks to my knowledge of aerodynamics and chemistry, I was able to design and create “mini” rockets of about 30 cm. At that time, I only did it to satisfy myself and did not foresee the consequences. During one test of the rocket, I failed and caused an explosion, fortunately there was no damage. From then on, I stopped this dangerous research and focused on studying for my graduation exam,” Dr. Huy shared.

With a passion for science and technology, Huy once thought that he would become an engineer in the future. Therefore, he initially planned to register his first choice at the Military Technical Academy (HCMC). However, in early 2014, while studying for his graduation exam, Huy became very ill. The cause was a ruptured appendix with necrosis and complications of peritonitis, and his life at that time could be said to be "hanging by a thread".

“Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of the doctors, I was born a second time. And perhaps that was also a chance that made me choose the second choice to take the entrance exam to the Military Medical Academy. After treatment, I only had 2 months left to review. It was really difficult to choose when I passed both schools, between passion and the rest was an invisible force that urged me from the rebirth after the serious illness. And finally, I chose the Military Medical Academy,” Huy shared.

Huy affirmed that medicine is a very difficult field of study because the process of understanding the problem and applying the knowledge requires a lot of skills. The intensity of studying and taking exams is also a great pressure. According to Huy, every few weeks there is an exam whose difficulty and stress are comparable to university entrance exams. “However, all the difficulties are the necessary conditions for us to hold a medical degree in our hands. And then continue a process of intensive study that can last until the end of our professional career,” Huy said.

“For medical students, there are many things scarier than seeing blood. For example, in major surgeries, an electric knife is an indispensable tool to stop the bleeding. Every time that happens, especially in the abdominal wall, a burning smell will rise up, it is the smell of fat and burnt human flesh. This smell permeates clothes and even skin and hair. Of course, it is scary after 1-2 times, but when you are exposed to it many times, you no longer feel it,” Huy shared.

Huy graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 2020, then accepted a job and continued his postgraduate studies at Hanoi Medical University. At the same time, Huy began sharing medical knowledge on social networks and fortunately, the content quickly reached a huge audience. Currently, Huy's Facebook page has more than 110,000 followers. According to Huy, medical knowledge is very boring, so each video always sets the criteria of being easy to understand, attractive and practically useful.

“Providing medical knowledge is so simple when everyone can search on Google, but is it accurate? And whether the content is good enough for others to absorb is a big question. Before providing medical knowledge, I always have to read documents, follow the instructions of medical organizations, reliable research... filter before reaching viewers. In addition to providing viewers with useful and applicable knowledge, I am also ready to fight against cases of transmitting fake and untrue information,” Huy said.

Currently, Dr. Huy no longer practices medicine but focuses on scientific research and technology application in medicine at the Institute of Medical Science and Technology (Hanoi).

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Quang (28 years old), an obstetrician and gynecologist, currently participating in training at Tu Du Hospital, said: "I have known Dr. Le Tien Huy for nearly 10 years since we studied together at the Military Medical Academy. Dr. Huy is good at his profession, especially his foreign language skills, so he regularly updates his knowledge from prestigious medical organizations around the world. I really admire Dr. Huy and have learned many things from him not only in his work but also in other aspects of life."
