Forces of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) successfully prevented a coup in the capital Kinshasa over the weekend.
“A coup attempt was foiled by the defence and security forces. It involved both DR Congolese and foreign nationals,” said DR Congo military spokesman Major General Sylvain Ekenge.
According to Mr. Sylvain Ekenge, the defense and security forces have completely controlled the situation.

According to local media, on the morning of May 19, a group of armed men broke into the residences of politicians and the offices of foreign diplomatic missions in the capital Kinshasa.
Witnesses reported hearing loud gunshots at around 4:30 a.m. on May 19 (local time) near the residence of MP Vital Kamerhe, who is currently a candidate for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The attackers engaged in a fight with the police, killing at least 3 people (including 2 police officers and 1 attacker). Meanwhile, according to the spokesman, MP Vital Kamerhe and his family are safe.
In addition, the attackers also broke into the symbolic office of the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the capital Kinshasa and live-streamed the action on the social networking platform Facebook. President of the Democratic Republic of Congo Felix Tshisekedi, mainly works at the government complex located in the Ngaliema area of the capital Kinshasa.
On January 20, 2024, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo Felix Tshisekedi was officially sworn in for a second five-year term after winning an overwhelming majority of votes against his opponents in the presidential election on December 20, 2023 with more than 73% of the total votes.
