Cassava processing along the value chain

Thời báo Ngân hàngThời báo Ngân hàng23/08/2024

With a contribution of 50% of the total income of the cassava processing industry of the whole country, Tay Ninh province is calculating to promote processing and develop the production of this agricultural product according to the value chain.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has listed cassava in the list of 10 key export crops of Vietnam (with high export value, ranking third after coffee and rice). Vietnamese cassava starch and sliced cassava have become one of the seven important export products; the value, processing output and export have grown rapidly over the years, Vietnam is the second largest cassava exporter in the world after Thailand.

Tay Ninh province has an agricultural land area of about 341,897.0 hectares, of which 61,000 hectares are cassava production land (accounting for 23%), the second largest in the country (after Gia Lai province) with an annual output of over 2 million tons, an average yield of 33.2 tons/ha, the highest in the country.

Cassava has been included in the group of 10 key products of Vietnam.

Of the total 120 cassava starch processing factories nationwide, Tay Ninh has 57 factories. Thanks to the exceptionally high cultivation efficiency compared to the national average, the average annual cassava yield in Tay Ninh is 33 - 35 tons/ha, 1.7 times higher than the national average yield (20 tons/ha). Although the total cassava growing area accounts for only 10% of the country's total cassava area, the output accounts for 20% of the national output. The province's cassava processing industry has contributed 50% to the national income from cassava.

Currently, cassava production in the province only meets 50% of the demand for raw materials. Every year, factories in the province often have to import from 2 to 3 million tons of fresh tubers from other localities such as Binh Phuoc, Gia Lai, Dong Nai... and neighboring Cambodia. The total import turnover of fresh cassava tubers and dried cassava slices from Cambodia is more than 1 billion USD in 2022.

According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Xuan - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tay Ninh province, processing and manufacturing enterprises need to sign contracts with people, proactively source raw materials for production, not through traders, ensuring the interests of both enterprises and farmers; For the cassava processing industry to develop sustainably, it is necessary to build production processes, increase scientific and technological research activities to meet the development needs of the cassava industry, encourage farmers to produce according to standards; increase market research activities...

In recent times, the production, processing and consumption of cassava have achieved remarkable results in both output and export value. On April 17, 2024, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development approved the Project "Sustainable development of the cassava industry to 2030, vision to 2050", with the goal of reaching about 11.5-12.5 million tons of fresh cassava nationwide by 2030; Vision to 2050, Vietnam's cassava industry continues to develop sustainably, 70-80% of the cassava growing area applies sustainable farming processes, the output of fresh cassava used for deep processing of some products (starch, ethanol, MSG...) accounts for over 90%, the export turnover of cassava and cassava products reaches about 2.3-2.5 billion USD.

Speaking more clearly about the project, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung said that the Ministry has issued a project with the goal of focusing on improving productivity; diversifying processed products from cassava; expanding export markets; and organizing sustainable production. In particular, units under the Ministry and localities will study and develop mechanisms and policies to develop this industry; proactively coordinate and support businesses to remove difficulties and obstacles related to markets, taxes, and planning of growing areas, etc.
