Criticizing the referee, affecting the reputation of V-League, Coach Van Sy Son was fined by VFF

On April 8, the Disciplinary Board of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) announced penalties for individuals and groups with inappropriate behavior in round 15 of the V-League 2023 - 2024 and round 13 of the first division 2023 - 2024. Specifically, with statements attacking the referee after the 1-1 draw between Quang Nam Club and LPBank HAGL Club, coach Van Sy Son of the Quang Nam team was fined 10 million VND.

The VFF's disciplinary document clearly states: "A fine of VND10 million will be imposed on Mr. Van Sy Son, head coach of Quang Nam Club, for his statements at the press conference after the match between Quang Nam Club and HAGL Club on April 4, which seriously affected the image and reputation of the organizing committee of national professional football tournaments and Vietnamese football."

He emphasized: "I want to ask those who watch TV and understand football to speak up for us and see if the referee's decisions are right. I'll be frank, I warned him from the previous match. Up until now, 2 of my players have sprained their ankles in the previous round, but the referee didn't blow the whistle.

The same thing happened in this match, we just touched lightly and the referee blew the whistle. As for the other side, you saw it. It is impossible for a young team to play against a team of 12 or 13 people like that. I strongly condemn this issue. I have been playing football for many years, I know. I know that there are unspoken rules in football, we have to accept it. I told the players to be confident and play with all their heart. Then, the audience and the media will judge."

However, Mr. Son's criticisms are wrong and baseless.

This is not the first time coach Van Sy Son has attacked referees in front of the press. After Quang Nam's 1-1 draw with Binh Dinh, Mr. Son also said: "Regarding refereeing, I can only say this: Quang Nam team is poor, having to rent a field to play, although there are many difficulties, we still try our best to contribute to Vietnamese football. However, the referees are too biased towards the away team. We don't have the strength so we have to accept it."

In addition to coach Van Sy Son, Dong Thap Club was also heavily fined. Specifically, the VFF Disciplinary Board fined 15 million VND and suspended Mr. Nguyen Minh Dung, Technical Director of Dong Thap Club, from the next 3 matches in national football tournaments for his behavior in reacting to the referee in the match between PVF-CAND Club and Dong Thap Club on April 4. Dong Thap Club was fined 2 million VND because 5 players received yellow cards in this match.
