The official plan for Gia Binh International Airport designates it as a 4F airport.

The upgrade from a 4E to a 4F airport classification will enable Gia Binh International Airport to accommodate the world's largest aircraft, opening up opportunities to become a major transit airport in the region.

The Minister of Construction has just signed Decision No. 1737/QD-BXD approving the adjustment of the Gia Binh International Airport Master Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

The biggest change in the planning of Gia Binh International Airport for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, is the adjustment of the airport from a 4E to a 4F airport, thereby enabling it to accommodate the largest aircraft currently in operation, such as the B747, B777, B787, A380, A350, A321, and other specialized aircraft.

Thus, within the national airport network, there are currently 3 airports planned to be classified as 4F airports: Long Thanh, Chu Lai, and Gia Binh.

Due to the upgrade of the airport classification to 4F, during the period from 2021 to 2030, Gia Binh International Airport will have one runway measuring 4,000 x 45 m (runway 06L/24R in the southern area) and one runway measuring 3,500 x 45 m (runway 07R/25L).

In the vision for 2050, Gia Binh International Airport is planned to have 4 runways, with the addition of runway 07L/25R measuring 3,500 x 45 m, located approximately 366 m north of runway 07R/25L; and runway 06R/24L measuring 3,650 x 45 m, located approximately 366 m south of runway 06L/24R.

Another important adjustment is the planned connection of Gia Binh International Airport to the expressway from Hanoi to the airport and Hai Phong city; and the placement of an urban railway station in the airport's passenger terminal area to facilitate connection with the national railway system and the urban railway line connecting to Hanoi.

Detailed planning for the connecting transportation system is determined in sectoral and provincial planning to ensure consistency and meet the needs of socio -economic development.

According to the consulting unit responsible for the revised planning, the national airport system includes two airports that meet the 4F classification: Long Thanh International Airport, serving air transport and socio-economic development in the South, and Chu Lai International Airport, serving air transport and socio-economic development in the Central region.

However, the northern region does not yet have an airport that meets the 4F classification, which will create an imbalance in the distribution of air transport activities for large aircraft (Code F).

Gia Binh International Airport is a newly constructed airport, serving as the largest air gateway in Northern Vietnam, handling both VIP flights and acting as a hub for air passenger and cargo transportation.

With a planned runway length of 3,500m, it is basically sufficient for operating Code F and Code E aircraft, except for the B747-400 and B747-400F aircraft, which have limitations on their maximum takeoff weight.

However, to ensure competitiveness with other airports in the region, all of which have runways of 4,000m and future reserves, it is necessary to study the planning of Gia Binh International Airport to have 1 to 2 runways with a length of approximately 4,000m.

Currently, the land available in the Gia Binh International Airport area is sufficient to plan for extending the runway to a length of 4,000 meters and upgrading it to a 4F-class airport.

Since the construction projects have not yet begun, adjusting the planning at this stage will be very convenient and will avoid waste in construction investment.

Previously, the Minister of Construction also issued Decision No. 1714/QD-BXD approving the adjustment of the overall plan for the development of the national airport and airfield system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

Specifically, the Ministry of Construction adjusted the content regarding the scale, airport classification, and estimated investment costs of Gia Binh International Airport according to the planning in Clause 1, Article 1 of Decision No. 1102/QD-BXD dated July 20, 2025, with a scale and airport classification of level 4F.

Simultaneously, the capital investment needs for the development of the airport system until 2030 are adjusted as stipulated in Clause 4, Article 1 of Decision No. 1102/QD-BXD dated July 20, 2025: the capital investment needs for the development of the airport system until 2030 are approximately VND 485,472 billion, to be mobilized from the state budget, non-budgetary funds, and other legal sources of capital.
