President Laporta harms Barca

Since returning to the position of Barcelona President in 2021, Joan Laporta has faced the club's difficult financial problem.

Barca still face financial difficulties under Laporta.

However, instead of leading the team through difficulties with a sustainable strategy, Joan Laporta's ill-considered decisions pushed the Catalan giant into a prolonged crisis.

El Pais said one of Laporta's biggest mistakes was how he handled the huge loss of more than 480 million euros in just one year. Instead of taking advantage of La Liga's special regulations, which allow for the gradual allocation of losses in the post-pandemic period, he decided to record the entire amount immediately.

The result has been a severe cut to Barcelona’s spending limit, losing more than €300 million. This not only limits their transfer options but also makes it impossible to renew the contract of Lionel Messi, the club’s icon and commercial profit machine.

Messi's departure has resulted in an estimated loss of €60 million in revenue per season, a major blow to the club's already tight budget. In addition, instead of building a solid financial foundation, Laporta has opted for the short-term path of selling assets and activating " economic levers".

Selling shares in Barca Studios or broadcasting rights provides immediate cash flow, but at the cost of mortgaging the club’s future. Notably, the value of Barca Studios was over-inflated, leading to delayed payments or withdrawals by partners, leaving the club short of cash flow.

Barca continue to face difficulties recently.

These moves are not only temporary but also exacerbate the financial instability. Despite significant cuts to the wage bill, Barcelona still face barriers from La Liga's salary cap, making signing new players a difficult problem.

Laporta, his vision clouded by the pressure to save the team, seems to be betting on quick fixes rather than long-term planning. He is not the one who started the crisis, but his hasty and unstrategic decisions are making Barcelona’s financial wounds harder to heal.

As a result, the Catalan club is facing a serious financial crisis, with a record loss of 231 million euros in the October 2025 financial reporting period.

The club's total debt has surpassed 4 billion euros, pushing the Catalan giant to the brink of bankruptcy, lacking liquidity and facing financial obligations that are difficult to meet in the short and long term.
