Vinh Long: Overcoming pollution, preparing to invest in An Hiep landfill phase 3

On the afternoon of October 14, Vice Chairman of Vinh Long Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Quynh Thien chaired a meeting with relevant departments, branches and localities to evaluate the results of environmental pollution remediation at An Hiep landfill (An Hiep commune, Vinh Long province), and discuss solutions to take care of the health of people living around this area.

According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, recently, pollution remediation projects at the landfill have been implemented synchronously. The Ba Tri Project Management Board coordinated with the operating unit and local authorities to inspect and handle the situation of rainwater leakage into the leachate system; patch HDPE tarpaulins, reinforce drainage pipes, ensuring completion in October 2025.

Odor control work has been significantly enhanced. The operating unit regularly sprays deodorizing biological solutions, following the correct burial process. In particular, after experts directly came down to handle the treatment, the odor pollution has significantly reduced, and has been basically accepted by the people.

Mr. Bui Tuan An, Chairman of the People's Committee of An Hiep Commune, said: "The bad smell has been basically resolved, and people are less upset than before. The smell mainly flies into the river and then disperses, and is no longer as serious as before." He also asked the province to support more funding to continue the work of overcoming pollution in this area.

Regarding waste receiving infrastructure, currently two landfill cells No. 15 and 16, dug 5m deep, can receive waste until the end of 2026. In light of this reality, the province is promoting investment in phase 3 - expanding An Hiep landfill, and at the same time calling for investment in mini incinerator technology with a capacity of 100 tons/day. When the incineration treatment project is implemented, the amount of waste to be buried will be significantly reduced, contributing to improving the sustainable environment.

Regarding people's health care, a representative of the Vinh Long Department of Health said that regular health check-ups are maintained twice a year. In the past two years, no diseases directly related to environmental pollution have been detected. The Department also proposed a budget of VND1,016 billion to support health insurance for 1,179 people affected by the landfill.

Concluding the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Quynh Thien highly appreciated the efforts of the units: "Last month was the peak of pollution, although it could not be completely treated 100%, the units coordinated closely, found appropriate technical solutions, and contributed to stabilizing the situation."

Mr. Nguyen Quynh Thien requested to continue maintaining the achieved results, moving towards sustainable pollution remediation, and urgently completing the investment plan for phase 3, focusing on calling for investment in mini incinerators, combining embankment renovation, digging new ponds, and effectively regulating rainwater.

Regarding the proposal to support health insurance, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Health to coordinate with the locality to review for the second time, report back to the Provincial People's Committee for consideration, and submit for approval of appropriate funding. He also emphasized the requirement for units to closely follow the direction, maintain environmental stability and security and order, creating a favorable foundation for the implementation of the project phase 3 in the coming time.
