New curriculum, new exam regulations and parents' concerns

In two months, the entrance exam for grade 10 will take place, and in less than three months, the high school graduation exam and university entrance exam will take place. This is the year that candidates will take the exam according to the new program with many changes in regulations, so parents are "sitting on hot coals".

DOUBLE THE WORRY

"For almost the entire school year, my family has been on the street more than at home, both of our children are about to take two important exams. The youngest son is taking the 10th grade entrance exam, the older son is taking the high school graduation exam. My wife works office hours, it is difficult to take the children to school, so I am almost in charge of taking the children to and from regular school and extra classes. Circular 29 has been implemented, teachers who teach children in class cannot teach extra classes outside, so we have to run around looking for extra classes," said Mr. Nguyen Trung Thanh (residing in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City).

On the day Thanh Nien Newspaper organized the Exam Season Consulting program at Marie Curie High School (District 3) at the end of February, even though he was not a parent of the school, Mr. Thanh still took the day off work, spent the whole morning listening to the teachers' advice and asked for more information at the end of the day.

Mr. Thanh confided: "There are many innovations in this year's exam, making parents who are already worried about their children's education even more worried. We are worried about the Ho Chi Minh City 10th grade entrance exam and the high school graduation exam with the 2018 GeneralEducation Program. The 2025 university admission regulations with many new points, from converting equivalent scores, to only registering for majors without registering for subject combinations, admission methods... we are also confused, afraid that there will be some negligence in the registration process that will greatly affect the results. Like last year, my friend's child had extra points to get into the major he liked, but I don't understand how when registering, he failed the major he wanted to study, and the major he registered for was passed."

PASSING THE UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE IS NOT DIFFICULT, JUST WORRY ABOUT THE RIGHT MAJOR

Mr. Trinh Minh Linh, parent of student Trinh Hieu Phuong, class 12A3, Truong Dinh High School (Go Cong City, Tien Giang ), confided like that. Mr. Linh and his wife are elementary school teachers in Tan Phu Dong District, having to take a ferry to the mainland. To make it convenient for their child to go to high school, for the past 3 years Phuong has lived at her grandparents' house, only seeing her parents on weekends.

"This year, there are many changes in the exams, many new majors, new combinations, new general education programs. I worry about my child but can only encourage him. I read the newspaper, follow the news about the exams to give him more advice," Linh shared.

Hieu Phuong loves information technology and wants to go to the University of Information Technology or the University of Natural Sciences of Ho Chi Minh City National University. Mr. Linh once suggested that his son pursue education like his parents, but in the end he respected his son's choice.

The father confided: "I told him that the standard score for the major he chose is usually very high, competing with many very good students, but once he has decided, he needs to try harder. I'm not worried that he won't be able to get into any university, I'm just worried that if he doesn't get into the major he wants, the school he likes, it's a pity. I've seen many friends graduate from school with a major they're not passionate about, then go to work in a different field, regretting it for many years, very heartbreaking."

Support Sunday morning no extra classes

To reduce stress for their children who are high school seniors, many parents choose to accompany and listen. Ms. Pham Thuy Ha (living in District 4, Ho Chi Minh City) cooks breakfast every day and eats with her son, who is in grade 12 at Le Quy Don High School, District 3. When the whole family sits down to eat breakfast and chat, the couple asks about their son's studies, advises him to eat well, and the happy family atmosphere helps the son feel that he has a supportive family and will feel more secure.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Thanh and his wife (District 8), whose child studies at Mac Dinh Chi High School (District 6), support their child in taking Sunday mornings off from extra classes, so that the whole family can go out to play, drink coffee, eat the child's favorite food... to reduce stress from studying.

PARENTS DID NOT FINISH HIGH SCHOOL, THEY JUST HOPE THEIR CHILDREN'S LIFE IS NOT HARD

40 years old, with a daughter studying in class 12D3 at Truong Dinh High School (Tien Giang), Nguyen Thi Minh Huong (Long Chanh Ward, Go Cong City) often has trouble sleeping. Her daughter Nguyen Lan Anh stays up all night studying and reviewing for exams, sometimes falling asleep on the desk, and Huong also falls asleep with her daughter. "What mother can sleep peacefully when she sees her child studying all night long? I advise her to study moderately, take care of her health, and go to bed for a bit, but she will definitely continue studying before finishing her homework," Huong confided.

"I stir milk for my child, prepare all the rice, and don't make him do any housework during this time, because to be honest, he doesn't even have time to eat. There was a day when I left the rice there but he was so busy studying that he didn't have time to eat, just drank a glass of milk and continued going to school. I felt so sorry but didn't know what to do," Ms. Huong added.

Huong and her husband are self-employed, neither of them has finished junior high school. During this time, they have to take care of their children and their nearly 90-year-old mother who is senile, so Huong cannot work, and her husband is the only one who delivers goods for hire. The couple's life from early morning to late at night revolves around worries about food, clothing, housing, mother's health, and children's education and exams. When her child said she wanted to pass the university entrance exam to major in elementary education, Huong prayed day and night for her child to succeed so that he would be happy and not let all his hard work go to waste.

"My husband and I did not have a proper education, so we worked hard all our lives. Now that we see our child eager to study, I am very happy. I do not dare to put any more pressure on him, I just hope he is healthy, gets into the major he likes, and has a job as he wishes after graduation. I myself am also very anxious but do not dare to tell anyone, because now I see many agencies and companies being downsized, merged, there is too much unemployment, many people finish school and then have to do side jobs, their dreams are unfinished...", Ms. Huong confided.

Enough pressure for seniors

Dinh Tan Dung, a 12A14 student at Marie Curie High School (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City), hopes to pass the entrance exam to the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) or the electrical and electronic major at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education. Dung said that all his time is now spent studying. Studying regular subjects, studying math, physics, English, and studying IELTS. Dung said that he has no time for sports and entertainment, which he loves very much. Dung is currently very stressed because there is very little time left until the high school graduation exam but there is still so much to learn.

"My parents don't put any psychological burden on me, but I feel worried. I can only encourage myself to try harder and that the time I spend studying today will be worth it," Dung said.

Tran Nguyen Phuong Vy, a 12th grade student at Marie Curie High School, said that in addition to the pressure of studying, the pressure of getting good grades, and the pressure of approaching exams, Vy clearly felt the pressure from her friends. Everyone around her was "working their butts off" to study, many friends also only had 24 hours like her but learned a lot, did a lot of things, and still achieved high results, which increased Vy's anxiety.
