Potential is still wide open
Based on the foundation of pristine ethnic villages, unique traditional architecture, close to nature of the indigenous people; in recent years, Nghe An province has paid attention to developing community tourism. Accordingly, up to now, many localities have chosen this as a typical tourism product.
This locality has many effective community tourism models, including Con Cuong, Tan Ky, Anh Son, Quy Chau districts... In these localities, community tourism has truly become an "industry" that not only solves jobs for idle workers, consumes large quantities of agricultural and forestry products, traditional crafts...; but also brings experiences to tourists, contributing to promoting the traditional cultural identity of the ethnic minority communities here.
This can be seen more clearly from the community tourism models in Con Cuong district. Of the 4 community tourism spots in Con Cuong, 2 community tourism spots in Nua village, Yen Khe commune and Khe Ran village, Bong Khe commune have been evaluated and classified as 4-star OCOP products by the Council and Advisory Group of Nghe An province. Since its establishment, community tourism has welcomed 49,178 visitors to visit and enjoy the cuisine of the Thai ethnic group. The total income from this type of tourism is over 7 billion VND.
Ms. Vi Thi Thanh, owner of Nhuong Thanh homestay (Con Cuong district) said: Since our family was chosen to be the homestay, we have renovated the entire campus, accommodation for tourists and the landscape of the house. Over the years, we have welcomed thousands of visitors, most concentrated on peak occasions such as holidays, Tet...
Phay – Thai Minh village in Tien Ky commune (Tan Ky district) is also an attractive and potential community tourism destination. This is a village with 100% Thai ethnic people, with many unique cultural identities that are still preserved quite intact. Tien Ky commune has 4 households that are qualified to be community tourism accommodation.

According to the Nghe An Provincial Department of Tourism, the province’s community tourism potential is still very large. The province currently has many recognized community tourism sites, and some of them have been guided and supported to establish organizations for management. On average, these tourist sites welcome thousands of visitors each year.
Many rural workers and villages participate in community tourism services, contributing to creating stable jobs for hundreds of workers and shifting leisure time to industries and services serving tourism development.
Important resources from the National Target Program 1719
In order to encourage and promote the development of community tourism in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, in recent years, Nghe An has issued a number of development support policies to help people in districts in this area develop sustainable livelihoods; as well as create a basis for localities to invest and support conservation activities, better promote national cultural identity and regional characteristics.
Specifically, the People's Council of Nghe An province issued Resolution No. 07/2020/NQ-HDND on a number of policies to support the development of community tourism in the province for the period 2021 - 2025, with a total budget of about 10.3 billion VND. The support budget aims to help localities carry out propaganda, promotion, tourism promotion and professional training.
In addition, partial funding is provided for families to build toilets and purchase initial equipment (blankets, sheets, pillows, mattresses, water filters, etc.); and art troupes from villages and hamlets are supported to purchase musical instruments and performance costumes to serve tourists.
Since the implementation of Project 6, the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2025 period (National Target Program 1719) on preserving and promoting the fine traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development, many supported contents have been deployed, adding motivation for people and local authorities to consolidate and promote community tourism.
Specifically, the whole province has built 1 model of traditional culture of ethnic minorities, which is the museum of ethnic minorities in Quy Chau district; 3 typical tourist destinations of ethnic minorities have been supported; 1 typical traditional cultural village of ethnic minorities has been supported; 10 community bookcases have also been supported; 1 special and typical national relic of ethnic minorities has been supported for upgrading, which is the memorial house of Mr. Vi Van Khang in Con Cuong district; 14 cultural, sports and equipment institutions in villages of ethnic minorities and mountainous areas have also been supported; 16 ethnic minority artisans have also been supported, with the purpose of transmitting and popularizing traditional cultural activities and training and fostering successors...
However, from the survey and the perception of Nghe An Department of Tourism, community tourism development models, specifically not all destinations and community tourism villages have developed successfully. Currently, there are many community tourism destinations in the initial stage, needing support for development; and there are also many villages, hamlets, and community tourism destinations that have been well supported through state policy projects, and even foreign projects, but after the project ended, these tourism models were not maintained. The reasons are due to lack of visitors, lack of community leaders, lack of connection with tourism businesses, etc.
According to the Nghe An Department of Tourism, the investments of the National Target Program 1719 are aimed at potential tourist destinations that can be developed. Therefore, these investments and supports are very necessary, providing a great "stimulus" for the local people to have more confidence in the local tourism model; and are also good conditions to promote and preserve traditional cultural identity.
“We hope that the investments and support from the National Target Program 1719 in the past and in the following years will bring a new breeze, adding “vitality” to community tourism spots in the villages of Western Nghe An to develop sustainably,” a representative of the Nghe An Department of Tourism shared.
